I need some advise concerning military and persuing a career. The thing is I want to become either a commercial airlines pilot or fix planes, specially airforce fighters:rolleyes:. So I'm interested in joining a branch of the military were I can gain hands on experience + money for college(which I could really use) + military experience overall which is extreamly valuable in these 2 industries, specially if I want a job in a major airline.
I'm not sure if I will be able to become a pilot because I need glasses to see far away,I mean I can see but some smaller things are kind of blurry:sad: .

I spoke with a marines recruiter the other day and I'm kind of interested in joining after highschool ( I'm graduating June 2007) hopefully as plane/helicopter maintenance(They gave me that small test to see if you are qualified and I got a 45 out of 50 I think? on it, they said it was very good and that I would do very well in the ASVAB, but you know how recruiters are, they do what ever it takes to take you into the army and well I'm not too fun of military combat and killing other people. thu if I had to do it to defend my life I would...) I know that if I join as plane/helicopter maintenance there is a high chance I won't be in the front line, but you never know.....

I won't make my mind until I speak with an Air force recruiter thu, I want to see how exactly everything works and if I can still become a pilot, which if that's the case I would go to college and join later through ROCT since I need to be an officer to be a pilot in the Air force.
Also as I said above, I could really use the money these different branches of military supposuly offer for college to active service recruits. and I don't really want to spend 10 years after I graduate from college paying loans...:silly:

My parents have always supported my decicions and they support whatever I decide, thu I know they aren't too happy about me joining the Marines cos of the war and everything and I kind of feel bad and guilty in a way because one of the many reasons we got out of Cuba 6 years ago was because it is obligated to join the army when you turn 17.

By the way I don't know my GPA, thu I think is somewhere between 3.0-4.0( I got lazy during the end of sophmore/ begining of junior year and my grades got kind of bad, exept for math which I always get 85 and up). I got a 1,620 in my SAT and I'm going to take it again in November, I want it to be a little nearer to 2,400(which is max) :silly:

So anyways, does anyone here has any military experience? Know anyone that is either of those things I would like to study? Any suggestiongs/ advise....

oh and sorry for this long *** post lol

I'm kind of in your situtation also. I will graduate this Spring and am looking to join the military so I can help you out on the militray aspect of your life changing decision. I need money for college and hope to become an officer in the Navy through ROTC.

First thing that I have found out this past year, ALL recuiters are like used car salesmen. They won't lie but they will streach the truth as far as it will go. So talk to some guys who have been through the system and learn from their mistakes. I can see that you are already doing this by asking for advise. So before you go into DEP (delayed entry program) talk to some Air Force/Marine etc guys that have retired.

Second I see that you have thought of ROTC. That's good. That's what I am doing if I get selected. However I have heard from many sources that the Air Force ROTC is the hardest to get. But there are other branches of the armed forces. Marine and Navy is a a bit easier to get into. In fact I think it is the easiest. The Navy needs a lot of mechanics and pilots to work and fly their jets and helos. Talk to your Navy recuiter also and ask him about NROTC. If you think that's what is right for you, you need to get the appilcation done quickly. Tomorrow is when the first board convenes and chooses appilcates. I don't know how many other boards there are. So talk to your NROTC cordinator about some questions that you might have. Your local recuiter should have his number. (note the Marine and Navy ROTC and pretty much the same thing)

Third, about the glasses they can fix it. I believe the all branches pay your entire medical bill and your family's.

If you need anything else just ask and we'll try to help you the best you can. But again talk to guys that have been through the military. They'll be you best source for advise.:go:

Hmm I had forgoten all about the Navy lol. That's true, navy has fighters/bombers and helos too. I will see if tomorrow I can call the navy recruiter, which is in the 2nd floor of the buidling where the airforce recruiter is lol.

The airforce recruiter is comming this week to my school so I will talk ot him there and well the navy, I will set up a meeting.

I have one question thu, can you take the ASVAB without signing in first? The marine recruiter told me that I had to sign in before taking it, but I have searched in google and seems he kind of lied. I might be wrong thu.

How exactly does the navy works? Can you enlist into the navy after highschool and later become an officer through the NROTC?

Anyways thx for advice Largefry07 :go:

That I don't know. But I will say one thing, nothing of what anybody say is 100% fur sure. I've been told three of four things that have been wrong before I had gotten the right answer. (maybe not wrong but certainly not the entire truth)

No, if you enlist after high school and put in your time for 2,3 etc years, you can't go ROTC. You can apply to the Admiral to Seamen program. That is basicly ROTC except that you are enlisted. Ask your Navy recuiter about it too. There are some advantages over that than ROTC and vise versa.

Im sure there are community colleges around your area that are cheap enough that you could pay your own way or have scholarships to...then you could get specific training on what you want.. I'm in college(off and on) in my area, and about 70-80% of the time I've payed out of pocket... the most I've paid was 1'000ish or so. I had a minimum wage job and paid it off too.. I've been paying it off with local crap jobs for my entire college life.(4 years) It is admiralble that you want to go into the military and if you actually want to it would be good for you I'm sure(My brother and I get recruiter calls all the time!! I donno why) but if you don't actually want to go into service but want a cheap easier way to get experience, look into the area community colleges you never know they might have airplane repair.. call around you'd be surprised what local colleges offer..same to largefry.. I know of many local colleges.. that are pretty good..very strange coincedence my college called me as I was typing this... probably for my brother who is there now..

I would say either the USN or the USAF is your best bet. Unless of course you want to join us in the glorious People's Liberation Army.

Look, I usually respect other people's believes and ideas even when I'm completely against them. To tell you the truth I hate communism and I got many reasons to do so, starting that I was born in one of the worst regimes:nono: .

It is fine by me that you like whatever you like, is your life and here in the US we are free to believe whatever we want, just don't try to shove your ideas and believes to me.
So please Stop with your God Damn Propaganda.
Have a nice day.

It was humour, sorry did not wish to offend. I personally dislike communism too(seriously), and work very hard to preserve capitalism and freedom; national loyalties do not always automatically mean political ideological loyalties. In reality I tend to lean more to the right than to the far left of Communism.

BTW, on your profile I see your personal contact says Diaz. Would I offend if I suspect the regime in question was either Nicauraugua or Cuba?

PS I've been to Nicaraugua; not fun.
