I did once yesterday. Was very fun but the timelimit bothered me to much to really do something with it.
I play it, but most of the time there are no more then 2 or 3 people in the lobby

I noticed that to. To be honest I expected more people to play the MP-demo.
Well it's only a demo, mostlikely 60% of the buyers won't even see there is a demo
You have to be a bit more patient
Most people come in to the lobby, look around and disappear after a minute or two.
I've been in the lobby for half an hour, just to look at this come and go
Take 15 min. and mostly you will find 2 - 3 people with enough patience

It really depends on what time you log in. Most of the players are in Germany and Austria, so if you log in during the evening (their time) you'll see more players. When no games were in progress, I've seen over 10 people waiting in the lobby. I typically see 2-3 games waiting in the lobby during peak hours.
I tend to host myself, so people see an open game, you'll have to wait for about 5 minutes for it to be full

There are some people having problems to open a game and/or to join one.
Right now we didn't figure out what's the problem with their systems.
Some of them didn't open the ports in the router.

Is it true that the game ends at 500 people? I played yesterday and it did, though one of the people I played with said it wouldn't.

It ends at 500 Citizens. when 500 of your people reach Citizen status!
(Or 90 minutes whichever comes first.)

What ports need to be open?
Can we play even if we are in the English demo and others are in the German one?
I've made a Test over Hamachi (i don't use gamespy), and the MP will work between german and English Demo well.:go:

You can find the ports in the readme.txt file.
First try if you need to open ports.
If you can log in to gamespy, open a new game or join an existing game - there is nothing to do for you.
And yes, we can play US vs. GER :go:
Well I guess the German part has the most players in this game. ^^
Unfortunately I don't know many English/American friends, who play this game too.
Would be nice if we play once together. ^^
I can't even find the anno 1701 lobby...and gamespy doesnt even list the game.
