View Full Version : Lord of the Rings Indoctrination
Hi folks, this may sound a little odd to you, but I am 49 years old and have had my first venture into Tolkein's world. I watched the DVD of "The Fellowship of the Ring" Tuesday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. All the LOTR and Tolkein talk here on the forum made me curious, so I borrowed a friends DVD's to check it out. Will be watching "The Two Towers" tonight. Also plan on buying the books. "Man I lived a sheltered childhood!":D
Wellcome!
I think the book is better than the movie (and much bigger)! Especially if you like reading!
Cool Dobber:cheers:
Better late than never:cool:
I agree with Nike ,the Movies are great ,but the Books are better ,if you like reading that is.:D
Somethings in the books were left out of the movies.

Well, its good you finally got into the series....they are grest books and movies..(Especailly the 3rd one)
I have a question Dobber: Were the movies the extended version or the regular becasue the extended has more stuff. And if you really want to start out good in the reading, I suggest you read THE HOBBIT. It is a adventure story of Bilbo, Frodo's uncle.....it strats things off about the ring better than jumping right into the hobbit....thats what i think at least....give it a try!

Yup, yup, buy the extended version! :)
Btw from the Fellowship of the Ring my favourite part is the 'Moria Scene'. That troll - goblin fight is awesome, also the mighty Balrog! The CGI effects are incredible! :)
It was the extended version and The Two Towers I will be watching tonight is also extended version. The Moria scene, is that the one in the mines where they had such difficulty dispatching that big blue blob with the huge club? I liked the battle scene near the end when the orcs caught up to them at the river. I am sure I will like the books much better. I enjoy reading, lately I have been reading some books about WWII and I enjoy them much more than WWII movies. Also I have liked all of John Grisham's books better than the movies made from them.

The books are definately by far better....no disrespect to Peter Jackson. Hope you'll enjoy them. I envy you though...I remember my first reading, ah those days... :D

You cannot compare the books to the movies.
Peter Jackson couldnt follow the books in every aspect, cuz than the movies would be 3x10 hours long. :D
IMHO both the movies & the books are the best in the fantasy genre.

Of course it is no disrespect to Michael Jackson....
You are just comparing him to a genius like JRR Tolkien! What can you expect?

Very good point. Propably I loved the movies that much, because my imagination about the world of Middle Earth was very much the same like in Peter Jackson's movie. :)

ah, but the artistic side was not of Jackson. It was of Stan Lee, if I remember correctly. His drawings of Middle Earth were used as the basis for the movie.
Also, if you feel like digging even deeper into the world of Middle Earth, there are several more books written. Lost tales, or something like that.
I like the movies better then the books.

Michael Jackson? :p
And I am not comapring anything. All I said was that the movies can't be good as the books no matter who makes them. Besides I have discussed about this a thousounds times...

The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and the Unfinished tales! Also there are some fairy tales connected with the Middle Earth - Roverandom etc. I think there is also an "encyclopedia" - History of middle Earth written from his son - it contains The Lost tales, Songs of Beleriand, Creation of Middle Earth & The Lost road (The Silmarillion & The Unfinished tales are edited from his son also). And, ofcourse, there are much more books about the Middle Earth from other authors!

:) .. I cannot prefer either of them. Both the books and the movies are nr1.
Oh and yes a movie can be as good as a book, this is a very subjective thing.
I have now seen all three movies, the first two were the extended versions and the last the regular screen play(extended play not out yet). I thought all three were really well done, am glad that I had not read the books yet, thus I am not disappointed in the story line of the movie. My favorite character is Legolas, he has such great strength and agility, his movement is so fluid. I greatly respect his loyalty to Arorgorn.
Now I am off to the bookstore!:D
My favourite is Gimili the Dwarf.
Peter Jackson did a great job of making New Zealand look like Middle Earth also.:go:
