Hi nrich61

wellcome on board :halloha:

There are many possibilities for a crash, as there are

- inkorrect installation of TAGES Copyprotection (look at the DVD and install once more)
- RAM with different clock speed?
- heat at CPU and/or Videocard?
- drive E: TDK DVDRW420N (some RW drives will not work with the game)
- your emulated drive G:
- Chipset driver (try an update)
- pieces of old video drivers, when the old one is not deinstalled before install the new one
- fragmented harddrive?
- .....

I can't find a soundcard in your system?

:go: good luck

Hi nrich61

I can't find a soundcard in your system?

It's a USB plugin soundcard/headset combo thing....

Something like This (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=103,CONTENTID=10013)

I've came across them before but I'm not sure how compatible they actually are... The drivers for it are dated for 2004... that can't be good, try getting updated drivers from logitech.

Graphics card drivers are not the most recent either, perhaps getting some kind of driver cleaner to remove the old ones before updating may help.

You could also try turning down sound hardware acceleration:

- Click Start then Run
- Type in dxdiag then click Ok
- On the Sound tab move the sound hardware acceleration down to basic
- Close dxdiag and try the game again.

- inkorrect installation of TAGES Copyprotection (look at the DVD and install once more)

reinstall the copyprotection or the whole game?

- RAM with different clock speed?

nope ;D built the system myself, everything is the way it should be, had a tech friend check everything as well.

- heat at CPU and/or Videocard?
nope; no problems with any other games, and my system dosnt get hot anymore (over heat hot at least ;D) due to some heatsink mods i installed, i also blow out dust once a month

- drive E: TDK DVDRW420N (some RW drives will not work with the game)
do you have a list of drives that dont work? though, again, i havent had any problems with it in the past

- your emulated drive G:
what about this would effect it? and yes i have bought the game ;D ill scan the reciept and verify the serial with you guys if you dont believe me :D

- Chipset driver (try an update)
hrmmm, ill try as last resort, when i checked with the board makers this last fresh install they said that these are the ones i should install

- pieces of old video drivers, when the old one is not deinstalled before install the new one
its a fresh format 2 days old latest video drivers and all

my soundcard i dont have installed at the moment as i dont have any speakers currently ;_;. and the USB headset has worked with all the games i play (and i play alot); X3, Battlefield 2 and 2142, titan quest, age of empires 3, prey, and alot of other games, heh.

- fragmented harddrive?
just defragged it :D

thanks for the reply guys

ive never needed a drive cleaner, but ill try it, do you have any suggestions on a good one? (free preferably)

She was not insinuating you didn't have a legal copy of the game, the Tages copyprotect possibly is having an issue with the emulated drive. Some copy protection will not even allow start up of a game even with the real deal in the DVD/CD drive.

- inkorrect installation of TAGES Copyprotection (look at the DVD and install once more)
reinstall the copyprotection or the whole game?
-> only the copy protection

- drive E: TDK DVDRW420N (some RW drives will not work with the game)
do you have a list of drives that dont work? though, again, i havent had any problems with it in the past
-> not yet  do you have the possibility to try another drive?

- your emulated drive G:
what about this would effect it? and yes i have bought the game ;D ill scan the reciept and verify the serial with you guys if you dont believe me :D
-> thanks dobber for the answer

my soundcard i dont have installed at the moment as i dont have any speakers currently ;_;. and the USB headset has worked with all the games i play (and i play alot); X3, Battlefield 2 and 2142, titan quest, age of empires 3, prey, and alot of other games, heh.
-> we figured out in the german section that you can't compare 1701 to any other game

ive never needed a drive cleaner, but ill try it, do you have any suggestions on a good one? (free preferably)
-> http://www.drivercleaner.net/

i've got another question
when you put the DVD in your drive, does the splash screen start automaticly?
i want to know that, because some have turned off CD/DVD autostart and that was a problem

unfortunately no, but the issue has been resolved i think

-> thanks dobber for the answer "She was not insinuating you didn't have a legal copy of the game, the Tages copyprotect possibly is having an issue with the emulated drive. Some copy protection will not even allow start up of a game even with the real deal in the DVD/CD drive."

i was being jocular -.-. i did turn this off before trying anything else, didn't help anything.

well you would think in some aspects you could (pokes sunflowers ego with a pin :P)

didnt do this

i've got another question

no autoplay was not turned off, though if tonight it dosnt crash ill try turning it off to see if their are any issues to help you guys troubles shoot.

what i did do that fixed it, i downloaded the lates Hyperion Pro drivers for my Via chipset, i have to admit i was very hesitant, i remember someone telling me to only go with the ones that the manufacturer lists on the site (went to the site and they had an old driver set listed)
i also uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers at the same time, sorry if i had thought ahead i should have done one of those at a time to help you guys trouble shoot. Though it was the same set of drivers i had installed before (the latest drivers).

I think that the problem was the chipset drivers, which i must say surprised me (again that all my other games worked fine in the past but this didnt ;)

Also someone mentioned the turning the hardware acceleration in dxdiag down, since it is a USB headset, it is all software based, hardware acceleration would apply only to any actual soundcard or onboard sound.

btw, i apologize if some of what i say comes across as sarcastic, i dont mean to, well not all of it ;D.

i do say, i love this game, i played the demo when it first came out and have been very antsy waiting for the game, that 90 minutes of gametime is such a tease you punks :P:bash: )

I think she may have meant energy(power scheme).

What do you have your power options set at?

The Turn off hard disks after xxx minutes

And the system standby after xxx minutes

She is saying not to have power options set at a minimum I think!

I have mine set to never.

That would be me!

I'm sure I have came across this headset before and the dxdiag does state

"HW Accel Level: Full"

So I assumed the headset had a sound card reworked in to the actual headset itself. If you are indeed correct and the sound is all purely down to a software emulation rather than physical hardware, having 2004 drivers installed for it probably isn't best!

Quick troubleshooter for it, remove the headset and see if the game still crashes.

If your still having problems, perhaps you could post an updated copy of your dxdiag info?

What is TAGES Copyprotection?

Is this something that comes with 1701 AD, some other program, or all by itself?

Tages is the type of copy protection used by 1701. It comes as a separate install along with the game. After installing the game, you then have to install TAGES before the game will start.

My CTD's are not random, the game just crashes when something on the background happens (for example a disconnect from wireless network or something) . I have this with the full game and the demo, on 3 computers with different specs and my laptop and a friend of mine got it too, with a different copy of the game.

a while ago there was an article in a german games magazine online
an article about copy protections at all
they told that a used copy protection reached the goal when the hackers will not crack it for 2 weeks or more
now we have the 20th day after german release
so far i know TAGES did a real good job

And now back to topic ?

You get CTD's on all 3 units?

i run NOTHING in the background, fresh install/format, and i manage my **** alot (i HATE anything running that doesnt need to, and i removed Daemon tools a while back as part of my trouble shooting)

anyhoo i get CTD's still, but they are far and few between. usually 2 hrs + into the game (no its not overheating -.-)

I have had a couple of CTD's, but they were after 10 hours straight gameplay! Yeah the game told me every 2 hours I should take a break, well I did take an occasional relief break and occasional trip for a snack, but I didn't shut down the game, just paused it.

Off-topic!
BTW, has anyone else noticed that even when the game is paused, if you have autosave enabled it still saves the game at the interval's set?
