Killing the pirates and then settle on their island

Bought this game this weekend. Really like it. It's quite difficult too (which is a good thing, should keep me busy).

I was wondering whetether I can entirely kill the pirates? I attacked them several times ( I have destroyed all their defensive structures including warehouse.

But their main fortress is left and I can't destroy it with my ships on the coast.
And the pirates also fight very well, I tried killing them several times (on land) but I failed.

So I was wondering, with enough troops I should be able to win them. But will that allow me to build a Warhouse on their land?

So I can exploit the materials there? I could use it.

Once they are gone, if there is a beach to build on, you should be able to settle it.
