I have this weird thing, and i dunno if it's supposed to be that way.
During the first game i played there were whaling grounds all over the place.
But in my 2nd and 3rd game, there are only a few spots alongside the 3 islands highest in the map way up north, and the rest of the islands (which are a lot) have NONE.
So... i started way down south, and by the time i had found them i was having a few islands, but could not find any whaling grounds, and the islands were taken by an allie, and i could buy some Lamp oil, but that doesnt really keep going well and is very expensive.
At a certain point my money ran out.
My question:
Should almost every island heve their own whaling grounds ? Or is it correct that only the island in the north have whaling grounds ?
Do only small islands have them ? or also big or medium islands ?
Or is this a bug ?
Since without the whaling grounds, i'd have to go way cross map completely, which take way too long, and defeat allies that are too strong anyway, and that kind of kills the game.

It is kindof the idea of the game to have to do some work to get to some of the resources, one way or the other. (trading or war). Sometimes you can build your own warehouse on an island already inhabited by another player, getting just enough room for a whaler or two. You can also try to trade whale oil, and use your own lamp manufacturer to get lamps. This is probably a lot cheaper, and also gives you resources to get perfume later on. (be sure to research courier ship if theres a free trader, its VERY handy if you need to trade essentiall goods. In fact, i cant think of any reason not to do it, i dont even think theres a way to get more than 5000 arristocrats without it, because the free trader and foreign cultures never trade enough colonial goods)

A good strategy for whaling btw is to place a warehouse (without any other buildings) very early in the game near whaling grounds. You only need a few whalers for a big town (bout 1 whaler per 1000 aristocrats) so that is why whaling places are more rare than most others

Personally i have no problems with the amount of whaling places.

the amount of whaling grounds also depends on the difficulty of the game, as far as i know.

I don't think that's it, since in my first game just about every island had whaling grounds, and now only 3, and they were way on the other side of the map, which is way too far for normal play, especially since you have to find them first.
And battle is at that point kind of impossible to win.
Whale oil could not be bought, and lamp oil not much either, and if, at a very high price.
And indeed, the free trader and other cultures can never sustain such goods.
Also, i find the free trader en courier ships the most logical research options indeed.
So basically i gotta be real lucky or hugely fast to accidentally find it and get the island.. seems wierd.
War is no optoin cause they'll own you fast :s

Welcome to the forum ANARCHY :halloha:

First of all: whaling grounds are just on the northern islands. Like in 1503.

But: i have a lot of them. Also on the biggest islands on the map :go:
You can also click on the name of a town (on top of the screen). Then you can see, if there are whaling grounds on the island, or not.

Do you play on "easy", "normal" or "heavy"?
