This seems to be the first natural disaster that I will disable when playing any future games. When a volcano ignites, which they're surely bound to do during your game, they are so destructive that they pretty much destroy your entire civilization. The eruption lasts for a good 3-4 minutes, all the while shooting out flaming rocks in every direction.
Most disasters can be managed by proper research and buildings (fire, plague, etc...). Tornados, while destructive, at least have a more localized area of damage. But volcanos pretty much make the entire island a death trap.
What they need to do is make volcanic eruptions much more rare. i.e. you'll only witness one once every 5 or 6 games. So far it's been every game I've played. Either that or lower their reign of destruction.
As it is now, it pretty much makes one large island on the map useless. imo.

I disagree with you except or a larger island where the volcano is.
...
In youre real life, do you thiunk you will settle where a volcano is ...
Personaly im just taking the ressource there, that it.
PoweredBySoy -> True, the volcano islands are, most of the time, the only place to get gold and diamond. In my last game, I had these ressources on a volcano island but every time an erruption happened, it destroyed the mines AND the Fire Departement (in 1 hit). The volcano errupted about 5 times in that game.
Just look at the destruction caused by volcanoes in real-life. What do you expect to happen when you build a town close to a volcano? [See: Pompeii] Take a look at Montserrat - that's a volcano island and most of it was rendered useless by a single erruption.
I'm glad volcanoes are so destructive in the game. That's what you get for being stupid enough to build a town near one. And if you are doing so in order to obtain gold and diamonds - well, that's the price you have to pay.

Of course look at hawai'i and they have no trouble living on an active volcano tropical island...
RoddyC -> lol, it may suprise you but I called that island Pompei
The volcano didn't destroy everything, it only destroyed my fire house (on the first hit and each time it errupted) and my gold mine... 97% of my others building were OK. It was the only place in the map with gold mines.
The thing with volcanos is - like in real life - you have to be lucky

In my current game I found a great island with lots of flat ground for growing tobacco and sugarcane. There are also gems and gold and ore which is a bonus that I don't need yet. Of course, there's a volcano right in the middle of it but I figured it was worth the risk.
Honestly, I don't know why you'd build a city under a volcano, especially if it's decimated you before.
What I did is store the warehouse with lots of tools, bricks and wood so I could quickly rebuild if it blew up.
It went active on and off a few times giving me an uneasy feeling before eventually blowing its top. It took out exactly one distillery and my warehouse, so I had to rush a bunch of supplies down to rebuild. But that's the risk I took.
I like volcanoes, the choice is yours, you don't have to setup production there nor build a city. If the risk is worth it go for it, except I wouldn't build a city under one.
Tornadoes (or hurricanes if you prefer) give you no choice. It just happens. Anywhere, anytime, to anyone.

Well, itīs unbelievable how often cities were build under vocanos in history. I am not only speaking about Pompeji - as everybody know this was not the best idea after all - but take a look around the world: there are a lot of cities near volcanos - and the people keep coming back each time one of them explodes. Incredible.
I never found a volcanic island in game, even enabling volcanoes as a disaster. Is it something to do with island size or any other map definition?

quite logical. The eruptions give enough fertiliser for yonks and gems by the bucketloads. Considering a volcano rarely erupts, its a good idea to build a town there if you want to get rich. You just need to have a quick escape route ready:go:
I guess the same applies to anno, yet gems arent concentrated around volcanos and the ground isnt more fertile around volcanos. Unless one is forced to build on a volcanic island, dont settle there.
