This is the first A.D. game I've played, so I'm still getting a hang of some of the more basic strategies.

As of now, here is how I place my first buildings (as the tutorial taught me):

1) Sail to a nice big island.
2) Place my warehouse on a wide beach.
3) Place a town center as far inland as I can.
4) Build 6 houses, 2 lumber huts and a fisherman......

Now one of the problems I'm having is when I place down that very first town center, it's not in a very optimal position. Almost half of it's "circle of influence" is intially unbuildable (due to there not being a market yet), while some portions of the circle are being taken up by the beach and lumber huts.

I realize the computer AI cheats and all, but whenever I look at their island they have the town center placed right in the middle of the island - which gives them maximum building potential.

A thought occured to me that perhaps I should be placing down an inland Market first which would enable me to place my town center much further inland. So a build order would go like:
1) Sail to island.
2) Place Warehouse on beach.
3) Build a Market inland.
4) Place a town center more inland.
5) Lumber, houses, etc....

The resources used to build a Market (before it's actually needed) would slow down my initial growth... but being able to place a town center in an optimal spot should pay off in the long run with more houses and easier infrastructure.

Thoughts?

If you mean the ingame tutorial - forget what they told you there, and do so fast. Especially the 6 houses are a joke, there is NO WAY you'll get a positive balance with only 48 pioneers... A german user wrote an excellent beginner's guide, translated by another user. Here's the link. I hope this helps. But keep in mind, that you can build as many inland markets as starting building materials allow - no one stops you from doing it!

What i do is..

- Warehouse
- 2 market (sometimes 3 if theres alot of freespace)
- build towncenter at optimal position (adjust markets later if possible)
- build 4 lumberjacks
- Start building houses

haha.

Thank you for the link. That gave me some great insight on how I should go about building my city. And it pretty much confirmed my initial thought on building inland Markets.

Thanks, guys. Can't wait to get home and try this out.
