View Full Version : Perspective for City Planning

Not long ago, someone put a post asking about a possible optimum building plan. It happened I asked to myself the same question.
Before to go further in the game, I decided to do some work about it.
I came up with the following perspective. To illustrate my explanations, I did include with the post a copy of what I have done.

First, using a program such as Excel, I drew a precise plan of the surface left by the town center once it's on the ground. As you know, houses have to be built inside that surface. I reduced the cells into small squares made by the width of the columns(0,50 cm) and the height of the lines(0,41 cm).
The page then looks like a large square pattern. As you know too, the size of a house is 3x3, so it will take 9 squares.
(shown in red on the copy)
From that point, you can start the city plan of your choice or of your dreams.

Now, to optimise the space, it is possible to put houses right on the lines representing the edge of that surface necessary to keep them part of the town center.
But, as shown, each house can go beyond the lines with no more than 4 squares only. There are 9 squares, a majority, which is 5, has to stay inside, otherwise the house is out.
It is good to keep in mind that structures(school, chapel...)can be placed beyond that surface, so it it possible to put more houses.

There are several different ways to display the blocks, separated by as many streets as we wish, to place in some area a fountain or a garden with trees for example, as we can do that now since the patch.
I found that it is fun to design the city that way. By having a plan done in advance, I realised it is an advantage because we can build quickly.
Also, as it is precise, we can use one part of the city only to go up to the next level, while keeping another part waiting in order to avoid running out of ressources, sort of a more efficient management.
My plan is not quite complete yet, but it looks like we can go up to 140 houses, including sufficient streets and structures like opera, church, senate, university.
But 150 looks possible if we squeeze a little, and probably a little more still, if we decide to put these buildings out of the housing zone.

Hope it will be of some help. For those who are ready to give it a try, I'll be happy to know how you come up with.

Too bad the town center doesn't encompass the whole island.
