First of all apologies if off topic ..

I quote from the FAQ Section

How do I get a picture under my username?
These small images are called Avatars. They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make. There are two kinds of avatars: those provided by the administrator and those that you upload yourself.

If the administrator has provided a set of avatars, and avatars are enabled, you may select an avatar that best describes your personality.

The administrator may also have enabled custom avatars, which allows you to upload an avatar image from your computer.

My question is that what is the criteria for the administrators to allow the use of custom avatars

The administration just has to decide if they wish to enable that option and if so then determine a set of guidelines to follow.

At the present time that option is not enabled and I as a Moderator hope that we never enable it, because then we will have the job of policing avatars and listening to people complain when we determine their avatar is not suitable.

We already have people pushing the envelope on the graphics in their signatures since we started allowing that.

I'd also like custom avatars. I don't understand the problem, all you need to restrict is the size. Not using pictures with questionable content should be self-evident and such images could just be deleted.

I understand though that you have a LOT of users, so maybe it would be a bit more work than estimated. Why not give it a try? You can always remove the option if things get too wild.

I do not think that custom avatars are really neccessary as the board offers enough possibilities and as Dobber already stated it would be a lot of work to have a look at he customized avatars as discussions like "Why is my avatar changed..YXs avatar has been allowed..." and so on ill arise , which will drag the neccessary attention from the threads, that has to be moderated to thos "side things" :go

In the present situation you have very few avatars for a lot of users, it does no-one any good in terms of identification.

As far as I can see, it's just laziness from the moderating staff.

I think it's OK at the moment
Well, not everybody has its own avatar. But i think it's not that bad. Normally i look at the name, the avatar is just a little help, to find someone.

But i still hope for the 1701 buildings

Right now, we have 761 avatars avaiable...I guess this is pretty much :go: and I have never seen all of them used

And concerning our "laziness": We all do this in our spare time..no one of us is getting paid for this "work"..and maybe it is understandable, that we want to focus on the threads, that has to be moderated and not the "side-things"..and be sure, discussions will arise, if custom avatars are allowed ..just for your information..even in the last weeks I had to talk to several users concerning their sigs (size, number of pictures etc).....

Maybe you should contact Webbi for that...with 72 avatars Anno 1701 is quiet underrepresented

I wrote this quiet a few times in the whole 1701-forum  but nobody heard me :bawling: or nobady wanted to hear me

But i'm waiting as long as it is necessary

On another forum I am on, the "Championship Manager" official forums, there are 70,000+ members. The moderating staff exists of a whopping...15 people. I've calculated that in terms of users per moderator, that site is much bigger than this one.

Furthermore, it's a place where a touchy subject is discussed (football). However, there they chose to allow custom avatar and not pics in signatures. It's a much better way of leading a forum, in my opinion.

1. It takes up less webspace.
2. It means it's easier to identify people.
3. Custom Avatars enhance the forum experience (for me at least).

The thing I don't like about the current avatars is that there are so few for so many people... or rather so many people using the same one. It's just difficult to tell people apart. But that's just my humble opinion. Apart from that I don't see how it would create a lot of work seeing the number of people actually posting here compared with the number of moderators.

Of course there would be rules about what you can use (just as there are rules about pictures in signatures). And if somebody's avatar needs to be changed it's something that would be something to solve via PM.

Apart from that we have a pretty good community, I don't see people who have "behaved good" all along suddenly freaking out with their AVs.

I always liked the themed forum avatars.
In other forums people choose all kinds of weird avatars that don't fit the topic at all, but here all avatars fit their respective game.

we have 2 reasons why there are no custom avatars allowed:
1. we don't have to moderate them
2. there are only gamerelated avatars
