[Bard’s Tale Song – represents the background info on Bard]

The story starts out in that a man named Bard lives in a peaceful town, and has a happy family. He is married and has a child on the way. He is out collecting water at the well because his wife is 7 months pregnant and has quite a big belly. He is bringing some water up and a knight clad in shining armor strolls up and sees Bard collecting water. The knight realized that this was strange and he asked him why he was collecting water. Bard told him that his wife was due for a baby in the next 2 months. The knight thought that Bard was an exceptional man for standing up to the embarrassment and ridicule or going to the well because only women went to the well in those days. The knight is so fond of Bard that he can face ridicule so well, that he decides to ask Bard about being one of his soldiers in the army. The knight thought because he was an outstanding man that he would enlist him. Bard was quite astonished of this and tried to refuse because he wanted to be home for his wife's birth. He also thought that his wife would die in labor if he was not there for her. He also recognized that no one would be able to get here water from the well unless she paid a local schoolchild to do that, and Bard’s family was very poor. The knight started to get a little frustrated with Bard, so Bard said that he would. The knight wanted as many soldiers as possible because a great war was occurring between their country (England) and their long time rivals, France. The war had already lasted 4 years and the English were starting to lose their upper hand. The knight also planned on setting up a draft in the city that Bard lived in so he could get more soldiers. But because the knight had hand picked Bard, he would be a high ranking official.

Bard went straight home from the well and told his wife. His wife started crying and Bard held his wife's shaking hands in his and said good-bye.

Bard then packed all his things for battle and followed the knight (who was staying at the inn down the street until the next day for the draft) to help him be accommodated into the inn's rooms. Over the night, he had learned that the knight's name was Monte, and that he had been a knight serving under King Arthur for 12 years, and is one of Arthur's favored knights. Monte had only lost 5 battles in the time he fought. He had won 34 battles in his whole career and had not lost a jousting match. Bard had an uneasy sleep wondering about the battles to come and if he would perish or not before he could see his newborn baby. The next morning Bard was up bright and early after his only 1 or 2 hours of sleep. He stood next to Monte the whole day and followed every order he was given.

For the next month, the men that were drafted and Bard were transported to the local barracks and were given extensive training. Monte then left to go back to the battle lines and command his men through the battles. Bard soon learned that the men he was training with would be under his command and he would lead them into the heart of battle. Bard trained with horses and sword fighting on them because he would have to lead his men into the battle on a horse. He was considered a light cavalryman, while his unit would be Men at Arms [check the unit showcase]. For the next 30 days, he and his group grew so close together that Bard occasionally forgot about his wife and soon-to-be baby at home.

Then the day came when Monte came back to see how Bard and his unit have been for the past 30 days. Bard said with great respect that they were ready to go into battle. Monte was pleased with the answer and told Bard that he would be transported to North-Eastern France [now Normandy].

[March of Honor Song – their great march to Redones]

Bard and his men had just arrived in France and learned that the battle was 200 miles away. This would be a long and grueling march. He cheered up the men along the way and enjoyed talking with them. After 50 miles and 3 days, Bard realized that some of the men’s shoes had worn out and they would need to stop and get new pairs. They stopped at the city of Bastonge on the Saar River. They found an old tailor that still made some shoes and bought out his whole inventory of shoes, for Bard was traveling with over 100 men! The rest of the afternoon, Bard let his men bathe and play in the Saar River so they could loosen up those muscles. They kept marching the next morning, and when the talk eventually died down (usually later in the days), Bard would think of home and his wife who was due anytime in the next week. He tried to cover it up as much as he could but when the company camped out, he would walk a little away from camp and just reflect, cry and even throw a fit and yelled into the night at Monte (in his mind). He would rather be home and enjoying a night fire and stew than have a chance of dieing and not eating some good, hearty stew, but instead rock hard bread and water. The next few days were extremely tough due to rain and windstorms that would abruptly stop their march. Eventually, after 10 days, the unit made it to the battle. It was located just off the town of Redones. The group arrived during the night and would be fighting in the morning. Over the night, more that 4, 000 men of reinforcements came to help the British. All together the English force was number at 68, 000 men and the French force was greatly outnumbering them at 80, 000. This would be a hard battle.

[The Die is Cast – the battle takes place]

The battlefield was set up like so. The French occupied a small fortress at the south end of the battlefield. The army was in and surrounding the castle and the long-range trebuchets were set up all around the castle. The sight of the French was so great that it looked like an army of ants was approaching and that the castle was their anthill. Through the center of the field was a patch of trees and a small creek. The creek was named Bakerman’s creek for their was a very famous bread maker who lived in the city and his shop was located on the creek. A small ridge followed to the south and then there was a wide-open plain. The English forces had camped out in the small patch of trees and occupied the ridge. The start of the battle was signaled by a large rock being tossed directly into the English camp by one of the trebuchets. Over 200 died instantly and the English were furious. Then a bombardment of stones started coming directly for the Englishmen. The cavalry of the English decided that they would not win the battle unless they took out those trebuchets. The French were not ready when the cavalry attacked because they were going to the let trebuchets bombard for a whole hour. They were just sitting around when the cavalry attacked and over 8, 000 French men died in that first wave and only 54 cavalrymen out of the 4, 000 that attacked. The trebuchets were wiped out and the cavalry returned to back up the foot soldiers before the rest of the French Army realized what was happening.

Bard and his men along with 37 similar men like him led their forces straight into the massive French army. When the foot soldiers had started marching at the mass of Frenchmen, the archers started firing armor piercing arrows at the front lines of the French. The infantry hit the front lines at massive speed having charged 20 yards before the line. The arrows from the English archers kept hitting many French. Eventually the archers came close enough that they slung their bows on their backs and took out their swords. The English army moved forward through the first 10, 000 men easily. As soon as they started charging for the remaining French lines, an onslaught of arrows came flying at them from the bows of the French. Bard was charging straight at the commander of the bowmen, but was struck in the leg with an arrow. The extreme pain threw him off his horse and hurled him toward the ground. When his new friends saw that he was hurt, they fought with vigor and strength for Bard. The English ended up taking the fortress and driving the French back to a forest by the name of Drachen. The day was over and the English had won the day, but the battle was not over. In the morning, the French would charge for the fortress and the English would try to fend them off.

When Bard was struck by the arrow, he fell to the ground and the battle raged on around him. The lines were eventually pushed back and the wounded were taken care of throughout the night. Bard hit the ground with such force that he had lost consciousness. His men kept fighting on and helped win the day. His force was returning to the taken castle and was looking for him along the way. When me occupy an area and are fighting hand to hand, it is hard to tell how far you really are on the battlefield and they do not concentrate about it. The men went back looking for him and found him unconscious. They took him to a nearby field doctor and he was patched up for the wound. It was only temporary, and the doctor knew that come morning, he would have to amputate it. During the first day of the battle, Bard’s company lost 34 of the 104 men on the battlefield.

[Last Fortress – the English try to hold the castle]

Through extreme pain, Bard endured through the amputation and it was bandaged up neatly. The men carried him onto his horse that was salvaged from the battlefield. The horse was found grazing quietly 50 yards away from Bard after the battle. Bard felt a little woozy, but he managed to keep his composure through the few hours.

The French started to charge at the castle. The archers of the English barraged the attacking lines until they were decimated. The second wave started to attack but they were not hit by any arrows. The archers had exhausted their supply of arrows and the could only fight hand to hand. The ladder men of the French had come through the night to help the fighting forces of the French get up the walls. Bard commanded his men from the courtyard of the castle and the men held off the attackers until there were too little to them left. Bard welt to woozy and fell unconscious. The French overran the castle, while Bard and 24 of his men were taken captive. Altogether, over 4, 000 men were taken captive while the others retreated 3 miles away.

[Lost Battle – the English lost the battle and the imprisonment begins]

The 4, 000 men are taken to makeshift jail cells made out of old wooden timber and a few scrap stones. It was set up in the middle of the field right beside some rotting dead bodies. Bard awoke staring at his horse being ridden by a French commander. The rest of the day the were fed nothing and some even died from their wounds in the cells. Bard drifted in and out of his consciousness. While he was unconscious, he dreamed of his newborn now probably born and the look of excitement on his wife’s face. He was overjoyed at the look and longed to be home. He then awoke and realized the uncertainty that he might die in this horrible cell. Then, all of a sudden on the horizon and in the backdrop of the sun, a force of 19, 000 men were charging at Bard’s position. The English had regrouped and attacked the French camp. Leading them was Monte, the knight and he charged with vigor. They slaughtered every one infantry and took captive the high ranking officials for intelligence. The English really did win in the end!
[At the end of the lost battle song, the music changes to sound like hope has come.]

[Bard’s Tale 2 – Bard returns home]

Bard was allowed to return home. He was hobbling in the door with the help of his buddy from the company when he saw two town doctors standing behind his wife. He had arrived just in time to witness his wife’s birth. He hobbled to his wife’s side and urged her on holding her hand. He savored the moment for the rest of his life. She gave birth to a son who grew up to be a very obedient boy. Every day Bard told his son about his encounter with the French and how he lost his leg for him. And they lived happily ever after.
