View Full Version : multplayer game with "direct connection". gamespy account needed?
hallo! i would like to play anno 1701 with my friends, we would like to use "direct connection". one of us, the host, creates the game and the others connect to it using his IP, right?
does the host have to create a gamespy account before creating an internet game? or can he create it without the gamespy account?
thanks for help! :go:

I never had to create an account. I played directly PC to PC, (IP addy to IP addy), with my sister.
yes, i know that i can play without account in a LAN. i asked if i can play with another person on the internet without account, using the direct TCP/IP connection.

I think that is what thegrinde meant, I may be wrong but I think his sister lives someplace other than with him! He did say IP address to IP address.

My sister and I live about 2000 miles apart hence, IP to IP.
I guess if you had your own server and knew how to set it up properly you could make your own "Internet" and play with your friends.
What's wrong with LAN?
Question for thegrinde - Could you explain to us the process you used in connecting gameplay with your sister? If it didn't require a Gamespy account, it would be very beneficial to those that do not want to bother with Gamespy! I have not played any multiplay myself and haven't used the multiplay controls, therefore I do not know the procedure.

The biggest issue we had with each other was lowering our firewalls and disabling anit-virus 'stuff' and anything else that blocks/protects your PC. It's simply a matter of entering their IP address once the other party is connected. What you're doing is connecting directly to each others PC going through a LAN. The LAN in 1701 is there to use this way. You also need to be using the same OS otherwise you'll have to go and open special ports to connect to each other with and that isn't a sure thing.

direct-ip doesn't work with german language version, because clients will find only servers, connected to gamespy. that's the reasen why many players installed hamachi to play via virtual private network(vpn).
propably there is a difference between us- and ger-version?
BaldJim,
each computer, which provides data to other computers, is a server. regarding 1701, the player, who invites other people to connect to his computer, runs a 1701-server, often also called "host".
the players, who join a game, run clients.

Hello,
at first: sorry for my english, I hope ypu can read and understand my sentences. :embarras:
The discussion you have made abaout the LAN-Play-Option in ANNO1701 were known in the german section, cause there are the same problems.
BaldJim: The problem you have is that the LAN-Option does not work in ANNO under normal circumstances, you have to connect via "DirectConnection", and therefore you have to know the IP of the game-host.
Donde: It is not necessary to get an Gamespy-ID for playing in LAN !!
For that of you which want to play without gamespy, but with a Lobby to Chat to other ANNO-Players, take a look here (http://www.gamersnext.de). You had to register there for a free Key and then download this tool.
You will receive an email to your mailaccount named in the registration with the Key.
When you register there, you have to fill in 5 rows:
- the first is your public name; this is displayed to everyone who is in the Lobby with you
- the second is your PRIVATENAME, this name only belongs to your registration. This name is required for installing the tool, and nobody will see this name.
- the third: your mail-adress
- the fourth anfd fifth are your password. It has to be between 4 and 22 Characters, only numbers & letters; pay attention that it is case-sensitive.
When you install the tool, there will be a window with 3 fields:
- the first is your PublicName, the second is your Password and in the last field you have to enter your Registration Key from your Welcome-Mail. (The Key is a very long alphanumerical row.
After restarting your PC and turning on the toll, take a search for a channel named "Treffpunkt". Maybe there are other players... (I hope so), maybe i am in that room.
Otherwise you can use the gamersnext-tool-forum.
Hope you understand my :nono: english and gave that tool a chance.

@ annokrat: sure, it works with the german language-version..
