View Full Version : [en]What is better? Hops or cane?
I've done a serch, and I rember on the old forums (I'm too old :( ) that there was a huge topic debateing what was better to get beer. Hop plantations or Sugarcane.
So! What do YOU think is the
Fastest
Cheepest
Space saveing
And Best!
Way to get beer? This is just saying that the island is 100% for hops and cane.
Now I personally go with hops in the beginning, and gradually move over to cane. 2 plantations for one distillary

To get beer? Definitely hops! Sugarcane will get you rum...
But the biggest problem when you play 1602 is: there isn't any hops, you would have to import that from 1503! But there is wine and everybody drinks it! Whereas in 1503 only Aristos want wine, even merchant dont touch it!
Oi you got me wrong -.-
On northern islands, you can build a sugarcane plantation + distillary to get "brown kegs of stuff". Same thing from the wineary, but it does streight from plantation to market. No production guilding invloved.

Hi wkw427, you know me better then that from the old board! Just pulling your leg!
BTW, kegs were the usual means to transport larger quantities of any liquid those days, be it beer, wine, rum, whisky or anything else!
As far as I remember the rumcombo was slightly more productive then the wineries... But I prefer wine!
That I do. But I would like to shun that version of me, as he was infact, a idiot who couldn't type.
But back on topic, what is the best way to produce ahlachol(I can't spell it. Thus the reason I said "beer")?
edit
This topic (though very old) has some good points. http://forum.sunflowers.de/showthread.php?t=3785 But my point was to get a new discussion on it!
Alcohol Statistics (I really hope I got this all right).
Building and Production costs:
1. Wine
Tools: 2 Wood: 3 Bricks: 8
Building Costs: 300
Production Costs: 35
2. Sugarcane
Tools: 2 Wood: 3 Bricks: 8
Building Costs: 300
Production Costs: 25
+
Distillery
Tools: 3 Wood: 2 Bricks: 5
Building Costs: 200
Production Costs: 15
Now, to make the whole thing comparable you need to compare 2 wineries with a sugarcane combo (2 plantages + distillery):
1. Wineries:
Tools: 4 Wood: 6 Bricks: 16
Building Costs: 600
Production Costs: 70
Produces 2.3 tons of alcohol per cycle
Costs for 1 ton of alcohol: $ 30.4
2. Sugarcane Combo:
Tools: 7 Wood: 8 Bricks: 21
Building Costs: 800
Production Costs: 65
Produces 2.3 tons of alcohol per cycle
Costs for 1 ton of alcohol: $ 28.3
---
As you can see, the two methods do not vary greatly. Wine is cheaper when it comes down to the initial building costs, both in materials as well as money. On the other hand sugarcane is a bit cheaper on the long run with lower production costs.
I usually choose the method that is available on or close to my main island. Later on in the game, when the production is moved to separate island I choose the method that will make the best usage of the space. For example I won't cover an island good for tobacco and sugarcane with sugarcane if I can get the alcohol through wine from another island.
That is pretty nice info you got there! But you didn't take into consideration that if you have excess sugarcane plantations that the cartmen would take time to store the cane, making the production of other goods so slower.
If you want cane to be going 100%, then it would infact take up more space. both farms are equal in space, but the cane combo needs an additional 4 spaces for the brewery. Also, if you place two cane farms together and put the brewery on those two squares that aren't covered, you take away an extra field of cane from both farms, lowering produtsion speed little, if any.
Not really, you don't need to plant 100% of the available sugarcane fields for 100% production.
In fact, here wine is a little bit more critical, it needs as many planted fields as possible since the grapes take a bit longer to ripen than the sugarcane takes to grow.
Furthermore you can kind of 'block' the farms, so that the goods are not picked up there by the cart men.
---
When using sugarcane I typically build like this: 2 farms right next to each other with roads leading to them. In between the two farms, at the outer edge I build the distillery. this way I use the 2 empty spaces that are not covered by the farm and 2 squares I could also use for planting sugarcane. However, there is still 100% production in the distillery, even though ever farm has one square less than it could have.
The sugarcane plantation actually does not use all the fields it has available, there are at least 4 fielads that are never harvested(may be more, I don't remember, but I do know at least 4). Plant a plantation, put it to sleep and let all fields grow, with the road connected of course. After the can is fully grown, wake it and watch the harvesters, watch which field they harvest first, and when they go back to it, all the ones they have not visited are not needed.
I build mine:
c=cane
P=plantationbuilding
x=road
D=distillery
_cccccccccc_
cccccccccccc
ccPPccccPPcc
ccPPxDDxPPcc
cccccDDccccc
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I've made my decision. After building about 4 hop farms (two of them only at 50%), and upgrading to Merchants, I really ran out of Grap-Water. I then made 3 Run setups. I now have excess rum.
Grapes > Cane at early stages
Grapes < Cane at Citizens +
wkw427, as Robbie47 mentioned there are no hops in 1602, only grapes and sugarcane.
No beer either, only wine and rum!
I'm not going to get a streight answer untill I say grapes, am i? -.-
.. but you already got your answer!
By the way, you *can* actually have hops in 1503 and 1701, so talking of hops and 1602 can be kind of confusing since you never know if you really mean 1602.
...The forum is the 1602 forum... =S
*sigh*
I'm fully aware of that but it's still confusing.
Well I kinda figure that things in one forum would not relate to another. EG, if I make a topic saying "Where can I get gems?" in this forum, I will get no answers. However, it would be perefectally fine in the 1503 or 1701 forums.. :)
*doublesigh*
Look. You can write down the problem precisely. In fact, the people trying to help you take their time to do so too. Personally, I find it quite disrespectful asking for help without taking 30 seconds to look up the necessary words. But hey! I can handle it! You just don't have a reason to complain if people misunderstand you. If you don't express yourself clearly you can't expect a clear answer. Amazingly and nevertheless you probably got more information than you needed.
That much for the ranting.
Furthermore you obviously didn't get the fact that people were joking.
And if you didn't spot the irony here, I can't help you.
Cheers! <--beer, definitely
...The forum is the 1602 forum... =S
Yes it is the 1602 forum, so questions about hops are inappropriate for the 1602 forum, it leads people to think you posted your question in the wrong forum.
To answer your question as you asked it -

Neither, hops are not grown anywhere in 1602 AD, and you cannot get beer from sugarcane!
BTW---If you will read through the answers people gave you, you will find that your question was answered more than once! Did you just not like their answers, did you not like the method they thought was best?

I'm not going to get a streight answer untill I say grapes, am i? -.-
wkw427, I'm sorry to say so, but it doesn't really look like you read the answers! You seem to just fly trough them, ignoring half of what's written!
When you say hops, I assume you mean hops, when you say grapes, I assume you mean grapes.
When I go to a bar or a restaurant and order beer , I want beer. When I order wine, I want wine. So what's wrong with using the correct terms?
As far as getting an answer, I gave you one in my second post: As far as I remember the rumcombo was slightly more productive then the wineries... But I prefer wine!
so stop nagging!
