View Full Version : Hard Difficulty-How to prevent war start
I try the hard difficulty with 3 computer player. Computer always starts war suddenly. I do not have enough time to prepare for war.
Could anyone suggest strategical to prevent war start?
In fact, could anyone sugget the strategy to win the hard difficulty computer play?
I don't know why computer play can expand so quickly with financial surplus. I always struggle for a about $100 balance and wait to cumulate money to build fleet. But computer can attack me with 5 to 6 small war ship.
Thanks
Unfortunately the AI's are not constrained by finances. Some have reported they have prevented this aggessiveness by not advancing their civilization level quickly so as not to anger the AI players. They also have mentioned not grabbing the best islands, leaving them for the AI. Then to gradually work your way up trying to not appear as a threat to the AI players.
Try to find one middle to big size island for you, and dont expand to another island until you can afford it in the war.
This means you dont have much supplies to advance ,but thats okey first.
Dont make a mistake like me and settle on the same island as a opponent and anger them =)
You have to have a strong defense on your island first. This'll weaken the enemie too if they start a war with you.

I have tried to settle only one island and advance slowly. I have also taken Igor out of the AI selection and what happens? They still declare war on me before I have anything much going and I am poor as can be. 10,000 coins is not a fair amount to be playing against the hard AI's.
I just wish the AI's were constrrained by $$. I don't understand how a financial/trading game can really justify that...
They are barely constrainde by resources then too, since they have unlimited $$, they can always buy from the free trader anything they need. it makes the game sorta... well, not fun at that level. At least the patch allowed 2-star people to advance faster. But are they even constrained by $$? I doubt it...
The way they get cash fast is really simple, actually.
Build alot of houses, and wait untill the houses are full. Then set taxes to the end of the yellow region. Tzxes will be high, but people won't leave. OR you can always use the BonazaCreek cheat.. But that jsut takes the fun away.
actually the way the hard AI gets cash fast is... they don't play with it. It doesn't matetr to them. They have unlimited funds.
I'm not sure if the other players do yet or not, but I am sure hard level AI palyers do.

This has nothing to do with the AI players dearmad was talking about!
The AI players do not have to follow the same rules we do and have an unlimited supply of cash.
Do you know, Dobber, is that true for ALL AI players? Or just the 3-star ones. Do the 2* and 1* ones play with money??
They all play with resources, though, right?
I don't think it is as pronounced as it is with the hard, but I have not been able to bankrupt one yet. Some of them will at some point discomtinue their building program, lending evidence that they do eventually run short of cash and resources. But I don't think they ever go bankrupt. I have seen them give up and leave though!
They would have to have a budget, because if you wanted to conqure them, you would need truly brute force!
But going bankrupt is somewhat hard, as you can always get moeny from the Queen, less you have gotten independance or are at war with her!
The hard AI players do not have a budget! They can run at negative overall balance and do most of the game. Just wait until you play on hard and then we will see if you still think they would have to have a budget!
We soon shall see.. We soon shall see! As of now, I started a hard game with carman, the Itallan, and Madam Somthing. I nearly have an allance with the Itallan guy, and I keep feeding the Madam with money.. So I'm not at war with anyone, yet.

You haven't started a hard game then, Carmen is not a hard player, she is Normal level. You have a custom game. But it sounds as though you do have 2 hard players in the game, so you may still be able to see it.

Excellent idea, ty.
I hit Carmen with an electrical storm right after a hurricane took out over a third of her main settlement, destroying a good portion more. She never did recover from that. After I attacked her and blockaded her access to the coast by building marketplaces to completely surround her as I leveled her markets, I then stopped my attack made peace with her and watched for about an hour to see what happened, she never developed any further, but she never gave up and left either. I finally declared war again and finished her off!
The AI players do not have to follow the same rules we do and have an unlimited supply of cash. Speaking of which. Back in the days when I was a C&C:Generals fanatic I used to fool around and steal money from him just for the fun of it and guess what, I used to get 20k-30k every time  I guess that applies to almost every AI in strategy games  I mean, it's the easiest way to increase the AI's power. "Money is power" as someone once said. It's sad, but true.

NOT true for Civ IV, and GalCiv II. I LOVE the AI in those two games and really appreciate how it doesn't cheat for the most part- makes playing the game a lot more fun, IMO. You can let it cheat if you want it to, but it doesn't have to.
I was going to first just try it with the Itallan and Madam somthing, but then I just put in Carman..
Well, alright. I gotta agree with you but that's not always the case. I like it when developers go the extra mile to make something better in a natural way. In this sentence, that would be skills.
