Hello "Mama",

You are the first laptop user to address this (as I did not note laptops) when putting this thread together). Laptops and desktops don't use the same drivers unless as noted as follows. So, unless you get a "hack" or them, none of those will work. There are sites tha supply the hacked files, but I won't advise to them myself. I don't advise as to hacks even though some have been successful.

You do have it right about the driver version numbers. It is the last 4 digits that determine which you have (5 for some newer cards like the 8000-series). sp you do have the 46.90s.

There is one problem though. Those with nVidia are no longer supporting Go cards less than the 7000-series, so all I can say is try what I suggest or go to the site of your laptop manufacturer to see what is available for your chipset. From nVidia you have two choices. The 84.33s or the 84.63s. You'll have to search the site for the 84.33s but the 84.63s you can get HERE (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_mobile_84.63.html). Again, I make no promises as these are designed for 7000 models but worth a try anyway. If those won't work, it's the site OR (not easy but possible) a replacement chip with a 7000-series.

Last note to clear thins up. GeForce Gos do come in both cards and chipsets, but some only use chipsets. Only the GPU (chip itself) that is done by nVidia and other manufacturers put the GPUs on cards. So, yours while acceptable, must have the right drivers to use with it and I can't say new new drivers will. Sorry to not be more help, but all I can offer right now as I won't have a laptop myself (but not for reasons most think). Good Luck and TRY is all I can say.

Sincerely,
Phil

ok, now i've thoroughly confused myself.....yet again

i initially installed the game on hubby's computer - the older of our two desktops.......it plays like a charm, no issues at all. i decided in my infinite wisdom that i also wanted it installed in here on mine so i could play during off=peak work hours. we're both running xp=pro with sp1 - i have some older proprietary business software that will NOT play nicely with sp2, ergo the lack of update. on this computer it runs soooo painfully slow that it's just not worth the aggravation

i'm attaching my dxdiag......if you wouldn't mind having a look at it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Get a better video card if you can, otherwise update your drivers (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_91.47.html) and set to best performance.

hubby's puter has the same card.....that's why i'm soooo confused

Dobber

Well, you have enough free disk space for breathing room. Perhaps there is a difference in the background programs that are running? Background programs can really slow a system down.

OK, I'm here now (as this is an edit of my earlier post). I do find it curious your other appliactions don't work well with SP2 and its updates (as the updates have improved upon it), but we can address that in other ways. As to your card, unlike Rnett, I know it will work just fine. It is low-end but you just need to adjust the in-game settings to get the best out of your card. Rnett did note the right drivers which are the same as those I linked in the opening post (the 91.47s) and do also follow the instructions in this thread to uninstall what you have and install the 91.47s properly.

Dobber noted another thing worth checking, but there migth be much more than this to be done (and part of it I believe to be why you have issues with SP2). So, send me a PM (private message) pirate_bait and we'll go through the optimizing steps outside the threads as it will both save time and waiting for each other to post. I'll be waiting. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

:gogo: doin' a happy dance in the snow!!

phil, you're a lifesaver.....the up-date on the drivers was exactly what was needed, and slowing my mouse speed down dramatically improved the 'shaking and blinking' problem i'd had with the mouse pointer in the game.

thanks again for your time and patience! :king:

Time for a update

Vista 32 bit (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_100.65.html)

Vista 64 bit (http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_100.65.html)

Phil Walker

Yes Rnett, there are new drivers. However, you should have noted for which cards. The DX9-compliant cards still use the 97.46 drivers and only the DX10-compliant GeForce 8000-series cards use and have new drivers. We must not forget some are getting Vista and NOT getting new cards as Vista is the first system with DX10 pre-installed. Good to note though!

One thing I did neglect in the original post is nVidia's instructions are OVERKILL! DO NOT do as they suggest, but do the following instead (after downloading using the Save option):

1. Open Control Panel then open Add or Remove Programs.
2. Find your nVidia drivers under "N' as the list is alphabetical and select.
3. Select the change or remove button and follow the steps. DO NOT reboot when prompted. Exxit Add or Remove and Control Panel.
3. Open My Computer, Open your harddrive (if more than one "C" drive), and open the NVIDIA folder. Right click on the Win2KXP folder and delete it. Exit My Computer.
4. Empty your Recycle Bin and THEN reboot.
5. Upon booting you might have defaulted to a new resolution so be prepared for that if it happens. If you must, Right click on open part of Desktop and select Properties and then adjust your settings to what you need to work with your PC for the minute.
6. Install the new drivers (whichever version you have/desire) and reboot again.
7. This time upon restart you most likely will see changes again. Even the amount your screen is filled, which is most likely less than before. Repeat the Properties option and this time to exactly what you desire henceforth. Also your screen fill and placement via the buttons/knobs on the monitor itself.
8. NOW, your choice. Either logoff (not switch users) OR reboot again. This WILL save your settings to what you want/desire.

ALL DONE! Now, you can try the game and other applications. NOTE; this probably sounds like overkill and it is, BUT they will be installed with no former drivers in existance to conflict. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

and

Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

Yes, I can see their one step is complete overkill. Your 8 steps are much better. (I am, of course, just giving you a ribbing). :silly:

Seriously though, your "step #3" gives me grief. There is no NVIDIA folder to open and no WIN2KXP folder to delete. (I am in the process of DLing the 93.71 drivers). Is this going to be a problem?

Phil Walker
01-03-2007, 14:26
Indeed Yes, there are problems with the 93.71 drivers That is exactly why I advised you to go to this thread. In the first post I noted the 93.71s are junk! I had several with your card verify this! So, don't use them. I said the 91.47s with your card for a reason. If what you have is what came with your system, the NVIDIA folder is most likely in your Program Files folder. If you don't have nVidia for audio as well, you can just delete the entire NVIDIA folder wherever it is. Otherwise you end up with conflicts.

Sincerely,
Phil

We're cross-posting over two threads.

Re-started the DL for the 91.47. The other one was what was given by the nvidia site (oops). Thanks for the link for the older one. I had already started it before your post in the other thread. I revisited this one because I remembered reading about the different install steps and simply missed the version difference as I was only looking for the 8 steps this time through.

As for the NVIDIA folder problem, I checked the program files folder before the above post and it's not there. I also looked in the Windows folder just in case it was there, but again, no nvidia folder.

I had this computer custom built and I guess it is possible the shop deleted those (the new driver install don't replace the folder?). A little while afterwards i got a new game and DL'd the then current drivers, but I don't remember deleting any folders (however, my memory is as bad as your vision).

So, I did a search for nvidia and got a hit for "C:\Program Files\ASUSTeK". In that folder is one called "C:\Program Files\ASUSTeK\ASUS nVIDIA Driver". However, both folders are empty (I have the option to show hidden files/folders on).

So, I searched for the "nv4_disp.dll" out of curiosity and found it in the "WINDOWS\system32" but I assume that is the file that gets removed when you remove the driver from the add/remove programs list.

Hence the question about step #3. I am glad you caught the wrong DL, but the question still remains regarding the missing WIN2KXP folder. I just want to make sure I follow the bouncing ball so as to not do any damage to the OS because I deleted something I shouldn't have.

thx.

Phil Walker

Checked the other thread and noted by not replying there. It is/was the folder in the ASUS.. Folder that you should delete whether empty of not. That's where the first driver install was, just your computer used a different location than normal was all. The file in Windows IS the main one that gets deleted during the uninstall and is replaced with the new install. Just put the 91.47s in the default location as then all the updates will be there as well IF any newer versions come out (worth having). I do test and confirm so here will be the place to look. So, all you need to do now is follow the rest of the instructions to install and you should be "good to go". If not, you know where to find me.

Reason for late reply is I help on more than one forum and just got back here.

Sincerely,
Phil

Ya think? :bash:

http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/1825/arlist2on5.th.jpg (http://img443.imageshack.us/my.php?image=arlist2on5.jpg)

I bring attention to the fact there are TWO Nvidia drivers listed in the "Add/Remove Program List". One titled "ASUS nVIDIA Driver" and the other "NVIDIA Drivers". Given the previous folder discussion, figured I ask and make sure. Which one should be removed? Both? I did notice one of them does not show a file size but not sure if that has any meaning (GalCiv2 also don't have a file size and I know that's not right, so not sure).

If I should remove the "ASUS nVIDIA Driver" is that going to cause a problem with the "ASUS enhanced display driver"? (or have I moved on to apples and tangerines with that).

And since it's up, I get the same  with the "ASUS enhanced display driver" and "ATI Display driver".

Edit: Ok, neither one has a file size. could have sworn one of them did.

Phil Walker

 You say you had ATI drivers as well?! Seems you and I need to have a "talk", so send me a PM (private message) and we'll make arrangements. BOTH should go, but this needs more information first. I will be waiting for your PM.

Not a mess that was too big we couldn't handle it thoguh. Good listeners are hard to find, so it was my pleasure. Glad you see the improvements and let us know how things work out in the game. If more is needed, you know where to find me.

Sincerely,
Phil

Hello Phil,
I am new to this forum and new to Anno 1701, I have been playing for two days now. Without any difficulty I might say and I am a bit surprised about your comments on the 93.71 driver? I use this driver, I have two 7800GTX cards in SLI configuration, Windows XP SP2, my system is a AMD Athlon 64, 4000+ and I have 2 GB memory installed. Now what do you think, should I change the driver? I am a bit confused now.

Hello and Welcome Witchy!

I have no intent of backtracking on what I have said. If you get the game to run with them, you are one of a very few. I tested them myself, so I know how they are and what they do. I've tested them myself on three differenct cards and system configurations and the resulats are all the same. The 93.71s STINK! I also have had others with them (here and on other forums) confirm my statements to be true (save the few I noted).. Cards leeser, equal and better than yours, so I stand by what I said.

To answer your quesiton though, if they work, don't change them, but be ready if you need to as other games don't work at all with them. I have over 50 games on my PC and every game I tested those drivers with the graphic quality and smoothness of the games and my system diminished. Problem ended after getting rid ot them and reinstalling the 91.47s on each system I do my tests with. I won't say you have to but want you to be aware that you might need to in the future if you have any type of problems.

Sincerely,
Phil

I've been running the 93.71's for the past couple of months on both my rigs, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...
