It's pointless connecting 3 in in a 5x5 square, whoever begins wins: All you need to do is place 2 together in a direction that's not obscured by the other one.

Example:

So... connecting 3 in a 5x5 is pointless. I'm not sure if connecting 4 in a 5x5 or maybe even bigger works. Then it would be like connect 4 without gravity...
