View Full Version : Nice tip for those without state-of-the-art graphics chips..
Almost there, I'm looking for a number with a W behind it.
Tjhere is no number with a W on it, sorry..
And it is the only sticker on the back with electricity stuff
That's okay, sometimes the sticker is on the other side where you can't see it.
I guess I'll look again..
This thread is #4 in the top 5.. God =p

If you can see the model and/or serial number, sometimes the wattage is within it as well. (HP/Cpmpaq user knowledge).
Sincerely,
Phil
I think there is a switch to differ between 115 and 203 watts. Does that seem about right?

That is the switch to switch your voltage system between US and European!
In that case then i see no wattage sticker on my computer.
I feel I am totally screwed.
Would it seem reasonable to buy that $60 chip that I was looking at? Even if it doesn't make the game go super smooth it will be nice...

Let's HOPE NOT! If so, new power supply is a MUST! NO DX9-compliant card will work with only that wattage let alone a PCI-Express version. Low-end cards require 250 watts minimum. Good cards 300 - 450 watts. You're looking at between $50 and $75 US dollars just to get a good power supply of that kind of wattage. Then you have to make sure you get a match in configuration. Only with the model or serial number can I track that down.
Sincerely,
Phil
Sieral number is no prob. The number for this is

Have some suppliers looking into it with you PC model number. No promises, but it might take awhile to find one suitable, so be watching for future updates from me as I'll let you know when I find something.
Sincerely,
Phil
Okay. So I should go to the place where I bought it and ask them?

I seriously doubt they'd have a power supply as normally retailers just sell new machines and not parts. If you want to contact HP that would be better or wait for my feedback. If you do contact HP, ask if they have one of at least 350 watts or to at least confirm what yours is.
Sincerely,
Phil
Okay I'll wait you for, then...

Well, they were quicker than normal this time. They have a 370 watt power supply that fits your machine. Company is "Thirty-Day". So, check HERE (http://www.thirty-day.com/shop/index.php/action/item/id/238/prevaction/category/previd/15/prevstart/0/). It is a bit more expensive than I told as it was only a guess. My Best!
Sincerely,
Phil
Alright, I'll ask if we can get that. You are 100% sure that it will attach to everything in my computer?
Also, after I have that installed, would you reccomend me getting a gForce 550? It is very much within my budget..

Yes, it will connect to everything (unless you've added things inside I'm not aware of) as your HP model IS on the list if you look closely.
If you mean 5500 (not 550), best make sure it's a PCI-Express model and not AGP as I believe the first PCI-Express nVidia put out was the PCX 5750. It should note what kind of connection it has. While in your budget, I'd try to find a better (higher number) model myself if within the range. If you can find an inexpesive 7000-series you'd be better off as only the 6800s and later are "top of the line" and will last you longer with greater satisfaction. Just make sure whatever you get (5000-series and higher) it is PCI-Express or it will not fit or help and end up costing you to get nothing.
ALSO (and MORE importantly) make sure the wattage is not over 370 watts as you can't exceed the power supply or you'll end up with troubles and could very likely "fry" things.
Sincerely,
Phil
Alright, I'll totally make sure!
