OK, I really like this game but I find the manual *extremely* lacking in the *details*. Usually when this happens the company puts out a strategy guide which helps or some *kind soul* writes a guide on his own and it winds up at 'gamefaqs'. Well, nothing so far. I am new to this world. I didn't play the first two in this series. So, try and look at it from the point of view of the *first time* some of you played 1503 AD (or 1602). I want to know the details. So, lacking any kind of guide, let me ask this question. If I used the guide for 1602 that is up at Gamefaqs would that help? Are there many differences between 1602 and 1701 in the actual gameplay? If so, could someone point out the main ones? I realize that this forum is also an excellent source, but the more I play, things happen that I really don't understand, and I can't stop to ask questions every 5 minutes - mainly, because I don't want to stop playing. I'm doing alright, but that's not the point. I want to know *why*. Thanks.
You are sailing ships, settling islands, building structures and charging taxes and that is about the extent of their likeness!
Playing the tutorials, then playing the scenarios pretty much teaches just about everything. I haven't had time to write up a guide myself, maybe eventually I will find time. Or maybe someone could compile the tips here into a guide!
1701 is (in my personal opion) a cloan of 1602 just reved up.
Yes, it has some features of 1503 (reaserch), but it is more like 1602. Many people didn't like the stalls system of 1503, so it was scraped. 1701 Also has a load more stuff.
If you read some of the faqs on www.capsu.org , you will ge enlightned about both games. Much of the knowlage from 1602 carries on. Like two sheep farm per weaver, ect..

Thanks to both for your replies... I did the tutorials and then I jumped right in on the 'continuous play'. Was that a mistake? Should I first do the scenarios as you said? Thanks again.
Well I only did the first three easy scens, and I think they are practice games.
Try them. As being an ANNO vet, I didn't really need them, just to learn the interface though!
Yes, do the scenarios. They will teach you more then the tutorials did.

Go through all of the scenarios, you will learn a little about the war aspect as well. And there is no way to lose the scenarios and the narrator helps you out if you appear to be stuck, not knowing what you should do next. If you run out of cash, you receive some from the narrator! :go:
Wow really, no way to loose them, eh?
I might try to loose one.. Muhaha! *lightnming strikes somthing behind me*

Thanks for the advice. I'll go back and do the scenarios after I get tired of the cont. play map I'm on now. I'm up to 'Citizen' on easy. It's a lot of fun. I'm getting very busy. I wish there was a way to set this at different speeds and let it go. Holding down the 'slow' key can be a hassle (and the scrolling slows down with it). That doesn't seem right. Maybe they'll fix that with another patch? Great game nonetheless. Thanks.

My bad. I logically assumed that 1503 came out before 1602... never checked out the demos to see the obvious difference... anyway my question about a game guide should have been regarding 1503 vs 1701. Well, thanks anyway...
1503 and 1701 are not as alike as 1602 and 1701 are!
After reading several threads I checked into getting a copy of 1503 here in the US.
The best I could find (for a 'complete' copy) is ~ $100.00  ...
Whats the deal with that??? - sounds like extortion to me...
C-F: I recently bought one on the German Ebay for around € 10 (Kings Edition). I'm sure you'll find one that'll be shipped to the USA or you can have your careening-device bring it. :go:
I think Dobber said, it's so expensive in the US cause there were not many English versions. But a German version should't be a challenge for you, right?

You won't find it over here in retail stores, Ea dropped it a long time ago.
ok, thanks guys - I was wondering about that...
Hmm, another game in the 'wrong language'???
I bought 1503 The New World and the X-pack second hand on Amazon.co.uk about half a year ago for a total of some 20 GBP, it was the only way to be able to play the X-pack as it never came out in Spanish :nono:  and I realy wanted to know/see what it was like. So.........You can try them, there might be some left, I will hold on to them as they seem to be getting more and more worth.....100$!!
But I do have two spanish ones (don't ask me why), if you can manage in Spanish, we could try and work somehing out............
hey Angkor,
Even though I was born and partly grew up in Madrid (never went to school there though), I hate to admit that my Spanish has become - 'rusty'...:embarras: - enough left to get by on a 'survival base' but not enough to take part in an intelligent conversation...
I doubt, I would be able to invest the time it would take me to relearn the language and learn the game at the moment
Thank you for your kind offer to try to help me out here though - much appreciated :go:

De nada.
Try Amazon "Marketplace", interesting things show up there every now and then, apart from the Anno 1503 one I got some more interesting "Older" games in English there myself. I only buy my games here in Spain in Spanish when I can't wait to play them (like anno 1701) because I prefer them in English.
