Game suddenly finishes

Sorry if this is a daft one!!

Just learning (and enjoying) continuous play, I've set the win conditions to last surivor and everything else looks good.

The game plays very well with no problems whilst Im trading and expanding my empire, but as soon as I declare war and start by attacking another player the game suddenly tells me Ive lost and finishes! and thats the end of 3 hours of campaigning and building!!

I've think i've missed something very basic here? surely you can go on campaigning and ramaging unitil you are the last surivor?! The game does this normally just after I've landed troops.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Check how much money you have, I think you lose if you go $5000 in the red.

I wish it was that simple! I normally have plenty of money spare so it can't be that.

Any other ideas?

I notice you just said you normally have plenty of money, does that mean you are not sure how much you had when you landed troops on the opponents shore?
Ships and troops are very costly to build, train and support. Could you have possibly neglected to check your cash balance and cash flow after building up your forces and setting sail to foreign shores? The cash can disappear in a hurry when at war.
