View Full Version : A few newbie questions

Wow! What a game. I love all the little details I keep finding like the manic pirate with the parrot and wooden leg hobbling around the Pirate's Den.

I'm on my third round and I've pretty much got the hang of it. But I still have some questions. So here they are.

1) I see these huge castles in these screenshots. Do you exercise eminent domain and kick out your inhabitants to make space for the castle, plan ahead for the castle, or put the castle on a new empty island for aristocrats?

2) I have seen a few resources that are too far into the mountain and I can't put the mine building on it. I tried getting the demolition guy to blow some stuff up around there, but even though he just loves to blow stuff up, there was nothing for him to blow up. Are these just bugged? Or is there a way to get at them?

3) Should I wait for independence before I wipe out that annoying woman who keeps yapping about her late husband Oscar? Or will the Queen stand back while I attack her (I'm sure she drove poor Oscar to his early grave with her incessant yapping)?

4) I sometimes have a resource that seems to be used much faster than all the rest. Is the AI doing some Lodge thing against me and secretly raiding my warehouse? For example, even if I have the same number of honey and cocoa plantations, one will accumulate in the warehouse, and the other gets consumed as soon as it arrives.

5) Is there a way to do war where I can declare war long enough to get one little island and then sue for peace? Or is war an all or nothing deal?

6) When Thielen tells me that I'm doing so well that even she'll be under me someday, the text says something "Thielen thinks you are not doing as well as she is." Is she mocking me with sarcasm? Or is it a mistranslation?

7) I read that some people had problems with the patch. Is is safe to apply it? Any caveats?

Keep up the good work, devs. This game is amazing! :go:

welcome to the Forum, I'm new here but can answer most of your Q's.

1) I see these huge castles in these screenshots. Do you exercise eminent domain and kick out your inhabitants to make space for the castle, plan ahead for the castle, or put the castle on a new empty island for aristocrats?

I try to plan ahead and leave room for the castle by building cattle ranches and production buildings on satellite islands.

2) I have seen a few resources that are too far into the mountain and I can't put the mine building on it.

Sounds like the mine area is not covered by a market warehouse area of influence.

3) Should I wait for independence before I wipe out that annoying woman who keeps yapping about her late husband Oscar? Or will the Queen stand back while I attack her (I'm sure she drove poor Oscar to his early grave with her incessant yapping)?

The choice is yours. She might enlist the help of the queen to fight back!

Not sure on the lodge thing. Are you using trade routs to deliver the goods? If so try setting the one thats trying to play catch up to deliver more.

5) Is there a way to do war where I can declare war long enough to get one little island and then sue for peace? Or is war an all or nothing deal?

Yes, i think.. open the diplomacy interface, the green wreath. Select the victim and click on the sword. Afterwords you can try to make up after you take possession of said island.

6) When Thielen tells me that I'm doing so well that even she'll be under me someday, the text says something "Thielen thinks you are not doing as well as she is." Is she mocking me with sarcasm?

sarcasm.

7) I read that some people had problems with the patch. Is is safe to apply it? Any caveats?

No complants here. :go:

Waging war for the one island will not be a done deal when you get the island, the AI will not be ready to agree to peace just because you offer it. Be prepared to fight until the AI decides they cannot win the war and decides it is time for peace.

I have taken some small islands with the lodge's help: Got a ship with tools and wood ready near it, blow up one of the markets, or even the main warehouse and if then there is an option (not the whole island covered by the remaining markets) build my own warehouse on it. Then I just wait till I can blow up a next one and take it with troops or build my first market. AI never like it but they do not do much against it (at least in easy and normal level, in the had level they just all get together and wipe me off the world before I can even try doing something like that..........) It's a fun way of getting at least part of an island, at some moment the AI just overbuilds markets and nothing more can be done but I get e.j. the marble I needed.

Thanks for the answers.

1) My next round, I'll try to plan my city before hand. I have some ideas.

2) That was it, Archilocus. I guess I got the marble quarry too close to the edge of the market area. It looked like it was just inside, but actually a corner was just outside.

4) I think my internal warehouses were getting full so I wasn't at full utilization.

3 & 6) OK. Agatha von Thielen is going to feel my wrath for her sarcasm.
