It is possible to know what your colonial good will be for the game at citizen level.
If you have good enough trade relations with a foreign civilization you can trade or buy the item in the lower row of their warehouse goods..
Place this item, gold, gems, horses,or flowers in your warehouse and you'll either see what you can buy leaving the remain item out of the 4 your colonial good for the aristocrat level. :go:
This comes in handy if you need to form a relation with one whom you've not trade with yet!

Bet ya a cup of coffee it is.
Place gems in your warehouse and you'll see the ones(colonial goods) that you won't need in the warehouse items display... They will be opaque but you can see them.
With horses and gold in the warehouse it becomes more clear what your colonial good will be.
Oh, that's new for me.
But sounds really correct.
Thank's a lot

I was thinking I had seen it before reaching merchants, but never really had the time to scrutinize it.
With Dobbers guide, I have more time to look things over and absorb.
Now I can produce jewelry without mines, and get setup for perfume production ahead of time by buying the goods from the foreign civs.

I found out a different way. I spent a lot of time at the citizen level in my current game. The other AI's began fratinizing with cultures and I knew that I had the remaining culture as determined from the diplomacy screen.

It won't work then. I had 2 AI's and 3 foreign civs and it worked fine.

Ah, but I think you are only able to buy those goods after you have reached a certain level as well, eventhough you have an excellent relation with them.
