At the begining of the game everything is normal, i get normal fps, but with bigger housing problems start ocuring - fps<=5!! :bash: How could this be?

My rig:
cpu: Athlon 64 3000+ (2.43GHz = 4000+)
ram: 1Gig RAM (dual 221x2 DDR400)
gpu: ATI x850XT with latest drivers (2007.01.18)
systems: Vista Ultimate & Windows XP SP2

P.S.

forgot to mention: everything in the game is on the lowest settings, no resource hungry apps in the background, maps are mid sized with 1-2 opponents.

Welcome! Let me address your PS first, as I think it is the attachment issue you are having problems with. There is a way around this if you'll note my Sticky about problems with the game so you can provide attachments, just in two different manners. It would be better to have your DxDiag by one of these two ways, so we have a better idea.

One thing to note though. All Radeon X-series cards less than the 1000 and later models have had issues (experiences on other forums have shown this to be true). So, you might need to either roll back or uninstall the drivers you have and use an older version. In most cases the Catalyst 6.5 or even further back of the Catalyst 5.4 (depending on the card itself) have worked well for many. So, might be worth looking into. I'm not an ATI user myself, but have some I keep in touch with that have not only noted this but are or have used the drivers I've noted with success. If you need links I'll have to get them from my ATI-using specialists if needed.

As to background programs. That too might be debateable. It is not only those that can drain resources, but some smaller programs can cause conflicts. So, by noting the second set of instructions in my Sticky, how about your list so we can verify and better advise?!

Keep in mind, this is just what comes to mind with no real evidence of what your system itself has besides what you've noted. For better analysis, we will need your file and background program list. My Best!

Sincerely,
Phil

As for drivers, I used 6.9C under XP and had no problems with other games. For Vista I first tried microsoft supplied ones and then downloaded ATI recommended drivers. Everything to similar effect, in fact those latest drivers gave me 1fps lower results.

Maybe I'm just over reacting, could it be the game becomes so slow at later stages for everyone?

Phil Walker
18-02-2007, 16:50
No, you aren't overreacting at all. What I'm surprised with is you got as far as you did. Now that I have your files things are clearer.

As I noted, I'm no ATI user, so I'm just going to draw a comparison as I know this is the case with nVidia. For Vista, there are other drivers and you should use those rather than 2000/XP versions. I've not seen a Vista system using ATI cards, so this is a concern that ATI even has Vista-approved drivers. Not saying this is the case, as I'm not an ATI user, but might be worth finding out. I will say Catalysts from 6.6 through 6.9 were known to be problematic and that was an ATI issue as many games had probelms with those versions.

Save for your video drivers and Vista compatibilty, there is one other thing in your DxDiag. Disconnect that microphone at least while playing. Many of the newer games nowadays don't allow for any sort of add-on devices as in many cases the ports are accessed by the game and if something else is using it, you will have trouble.

Yet, this is not the worst thing (as it's now clear by your background programs). Get RID of Daemon Tools! This game, among others, uses a copy-protection program that searches for both virtual drives as well as the programs that creates them. Once either or both are found, that IT! Game will no longer work properly, if at all, while the drives and creators are even on the system, active or not. I'm not going to tell you what to do, but you have a choice. The game OR Daemon Tools. You cannot have both and expect this game among many others to work. So, it's up to you what you do from here as once I saw that program in your startup, I did not look further, so there could be other things as well. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but virtual driver creators and the drives they create ALL have copy-protection bypass routines built into them, so this is most likely your biggest problem and you must choose from here what to do as I cannot help further as long as you have THAT on your system.

Sincerely,
Phil

Dobber

I notice the large size of the amount of the pagefile that was being used, 1599mb, that is a lot of virtual memory being used! Is it because of the Daemon tools, that much is being used?

Phil Walker
19-02-2007, 00:41
More than just that Dobber, but does account for part of it. Vista is a worse hog than XP is and save for the basic Vista package, 1GB for just the system to operate is required. Much like XP, Vista too has to refresh and swap files. Background programs are also taken into the equation. Daemon Tools and its virtual routines are most likely make up most of the rest of the difference. So, you did note only part of the issues with Daemon besides what I noted as well.

Sincerely,
Phil

Dobber
19-02-2007, 02:54
So with a machine running Vista, you really should have 2gb of ram if you are planning to play any games!

And as we know the requirements listed for playing 1701 were drawn up without Vista requirements figured into the equation. Thus those minimum's cannot be relied upon if you have Vista.

Phil Walker
19-02-2007, 04:36
Noted and correctly. Vista only requires 512MB for basic and 1GB for all other versions, but pagefile IS a factor. Not only that, but Vista DOES have issues with drivers. Many aren't using what the card/GPU manufacturers approve and even those are questionable at peresent. Only games not yet in development right now will have Vista support. This does not mean Vista won't work, but some hardware and software issues will need to be resolved to get any game of now and prior to work properly. Vista also has a LONG way to go before being bug-free.

Sincerely,
Phil

HOW did we got off on this tangent?! From the start, the user already has Vista! So, what was the point of noting this m'larkey in this thread? Does not seem to contribute to the topic much, IMNSHO. Both of you are talking furute and WE (the user, Dobber, and myself) are talking the NOW! The true points were the user has problems and Dobber and I pointed out the greatest cause IS/WAS Daemon Tools being on the system. The rest is totally unnecessary! ACK!!!

You're probably right Phil, but I believe the Vista conversation started here:More than just that Dobber, but does account for part of it. Vista is a worse hog than XP is and save for the basic Vista package, 1GB for just the system to operate is required. Much like XP, Vista too has to refresh and swap files. Background programs are also taken into the equation. Daemon Toos and its virtual routines are most likely make up most of the rest of the difference. WHERE were YOU, Rnett   ?! Seems it first came up in the opening post, and my first reply thereafter, IIRC. The thread started with the user noting he had Vista and I noted the problems relating to it seems. The post you quoted elaborate on the issues and having DT along with Vista in explaining myself thoroughly.

Sincerely,
Phil

Dobber
19-02-2007, 21:52
One thing we have failed to mention is the game was not optimized to run on Vista. The requirements list WIN 2000 or WIN XP, no mention of Vista! Although it will run on Vista there are no guarantees of top performance!

Phil Walker
19-02-2007, 22:34
Correct Dobber! Not noted directly but hinted to in Post #8 (http://forum.sunflowers.de/showpost.php?p=295730&postcount=8) of this thread. We get the same kind of thread on the TM boards which it is stated also that only 2000 and XP Home and Pro are supported. Not XP x64 or Media Center either for Caesar 4, but some have it running on those systems.

As you and I have both stated, this does not mean it won't run, but no support nor guarantees it will or at its potential.

Sincerely,
Phil

I think I was saying something about this here:

http://forum.sunflowers.de/showpost.php?p=239738&postcount=1

Jim, I see nothing in that post that says anything about 2gb of ram as does the contents of the post you quoted.

And the post you quoted was made in reference to the person having only 1 gb ram and having lag problems with the game while running Vista.

It got here because Dobber (bless him for being the pirate he is) made a post which made it sound as if the fact that Vista is a memory and storage hog was a new and/or recent discovery. That fact is not new as evidenced by my 24 Nov 2006 post.

What number do we call to invoke "the Thread Topic Police?"

Nobody said that fact was new and here it was being addressed in the context of the problem the thread starter was having and being mentioned out of the apparent necessity of having more ram to play the game under Vista and not out of necessity to have more ram to run Vista.

Thank You for replies. As soon as I get some spare time, I'll try to reinstall my XP copy and see how well does Anno perform on fresh copy wiht right set of video drives. Shall post the result, if anyone would be interested :)
