View Full Version : Strange Shadows?

I have noticed that the shadows in this game behave strangely. When the camera is rotated, the positions of the shadows change direction with the rotation of the camera. It seems that not only my view of the island changes, but the actual position of the light source (the sun) rotates as well. It seems wierd to me.

Is this how the shadows were intended to function? Is my somewhat limited knowledge of astronomy and physics failing me in some way?

If anyone can shed some light on this topic (sorry, I couldn't resist) I would be grateful.

OK, after further inspection it appears I explained this completely wrong.

When you rotate the camera, the light source that casts the shadows remains FIXED. I guess I am expecting the the light source to ROTATE with the camera as it represents the sun. It seems I am actually rotating the island as opposed to my point of view.

I know i'm not explaining this very well. If anyone has any idea what i'm talking about please respond. It's really no big deal, but it just seems odd to me.

Are you trying to say that when looking at the map with north positioned at the top of the map the shadows fall to the left toward the west. You rotate the map and place west at the top of the map, now the shadows should fall to the top of the screen, but instead they are still pointing left which is now south. Rotate another 1/4 turn placing west to the right of the screen meaning the shadows should now be falling right but they are still falling to the left which is now east! On to west at the bottom, shadows should fall to the bottom of the screen, but still go left which is now north!
Yeah that does seem a bit odd, the light source not rotating with the map

Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to say! Not very well, I guess.

It is really no big deal. The graphics are otherwise so nice, it just seems a little strange. Oh well.

Apparently you explained it pretty well, I obviously understood what you were saying! :go:

Touche and well played, my friend. I was simply referring to my 2 completely opposite descriptions of the same phenomenon. I guess I confused myself more than you.

Anyway, as I have just discovered this game and you appear to have been around here for a while, has there been any discussion of unlocking that light source and moving it across the sky in a day/night cycle (like Caesar4 does, if you are familiar)? Perhaps in a future expansion? That, along with some diagonal roads would really put a smile on my face.

I have heard no talk of unlocking the light source, as a matter of fact you are the first I know to bring it up! However it could have been discussed in the German forum and me not know of it!
