View Full Version : Strange Framerate Issue

Illini_Pete

I have never been able to get this game to run very smoothly, even with the graphics settings turned down. The framerate starts to really suffer as time goes by, and I always assumed it was simply a result of the city getting bigger. But I recently discovered that if I simply hit <escape> and go into the graphics settings . . . change nothing . . . and just hit <ok> something seems to reset itself and the framerate shoots way back up. It can go from as low as single digit framerates all they way up to 40fps by doing this. Zooming the camera in and out seems to slow things back down again fairly quickly.

Can anyone help explain this?

Not surprising to me me with those lousy video drivers. Read my nVidia Sticky and try the 91.47s would be first thing I'd do.

You also don't have enough free space on your C (Windows) partition for the game or Windows (if the game is on C) to breathe or operate properly, not to mention your pagefile as well. Some "house cleaning" is in order. 15% is the suggested minimum, but Microsoft suggests 20% to give you an idea.

Then provide your list of background programs. To provide follow the second set of instructions in the first post of my other Sticky in regard to problems with the game. Let us know and good luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

Thanks Phil. I think I have run into you somewhere else and you have helped me before (Caesar4 maybe? - I don't remember). I'll try what you suggest and see what happens. I just assumed the latest drivers would be best, but I think I still have the ones you recommend saved somewhere. I also didn't realize all the junk that had accumulated on my hard drive. I'll clear it out.

I don't know what a pagefile is, though. Care to elaborate?

Memory serves you very well, Pete! Yeah, I'm the same Phil Walker from TM. I just haven't been here as long is all.

To answer your question about what pagefile is, it's your system virtual memory (overflow memory if you will) that many applications (and games) use to allow them to run smoother by not refreshing so often. You'll note the amount you have just below your physical RAM in your DxDiag. 1.5 times or more your RAM is what is desired, but no more than 4GB (I use 3.75 myself). What your maxiumum needs to be added to your harddrive free space to allow the system to work better. Hope that explains it well enough.

As to the drivers not only noted in my nVidia Stickies here (both Anno and KoH English forums), but also in my nVidia trhads (even more detailed) on TM Caesar 4 forums, as many more people noted and asked about this before.

Sincerely,
Phil

Phil,

I probably skipped your nvidia driver warnings before as I was using a different card for a long time. I must still have ATI on the brain and it just didn't register. Anyway, I cleared up a ton of hard drive space and I installed the drivers you recommended and it definately runs better now. But i'm still not quite clear on the page file thing. I found the place to adjust it but I never messed around in there before. Should I choose the option to let the system manage the page file? Or if I input it in myself, should the "Initial" and "maximum" values be the same, or should there be a range? The window says 3070 recommended so i'm thinking to just set them both to that and be done with it.

I'm fairly confident you were on the right track and some simple cleaning up of my system will work wonders. I've had it for a while and I've probably unwittingly messed up all kinds of things by now. Thanks for the help.

I see. Yes, you ATI converts are excused as when you switch manufacturers, you are not aware of what is best.

Since you found where to do it, Pete, those os us who tweak our systems always adjust it ourselves. It is better to set both locations the same as this "locks" the pagefile (rather than lets it float dependintg on demand). So, my suggestion would be to set both locations to 3584. If the default is on a small partition, use increments of 256 and set the remainging on a second partition is all. So, input the numbers and click the Set button. If not message that you don't have enough space, click apply (if visible) and close that window and do the same on every window thereafter. Do not reboot when asked, but close all windows, then reboot. If more than one parition is requirted, do the same but choose the other partition. After changing and rebooting, get back on your account and do a sisk clean-up and defragment the drives you changed. If the one is a small partition, ignore the note about not enough space and do the defrag anyway. You'll be more than good to go then.

If you want to improve, background programs list is next as noted how in my other Sticky (second set of instructions). If you have any trouble and/or get any errors, let me know and we'll adjust accordingly. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

OK, so I adjusted the pagefile per your suggestion. I copied the background programs and have included the list. I literally have no idea what most of the items on the list are. Note that there are two blank lines. There are two boxes checked but no information indicated. I don't know why. You also suggested a screenshot - I have no idea how to upload anything to a website. If you really need it I will try to figure that out at that time.

Thank you,
Illini_Pete

For the most part, you need not know as it comes with experience. I will say you have way too many though. Before I fo into it though, I'll answer your question, but ask one first. Which version (by year) of Norton Anti-Virus or System Works are you running? If a version 2004 or later, you don't need either of those blans. They are for older versions but were incorporated into ccApp from 2004 on. So, if you have a pre-2004 version of your Norton Anti-Virus you only need to keep the first one. If nater ,neither of them.

Here are all to keep though; KBD, ccApp, NvCpl, ypager, and msmsgs. That's All. So, run the program again, uncheck all not listed, click Apply, click Close. Slose all windows save the pop-up that appeared after closing msconfig, then click the Restart button on that window. You will reboot. Upn reboot and getting back on you account put a check in the Do not show me this again box and click the OK button. That should to it! You'll see an improvement in your system and we'll hope the game as well. Let us know and good luck!

Phil

Phil,

I followed your instructions and turned off all those programs. Everything runs much much smoother now. Whatever all that junk was, it was sure slowing things down. The game is running pretty consistently at about 30fps or more, even as I build up a city. I haven't built up a really big one yet, but I may even get away with bumping up the graphics options a bit. We'll see . . .

I'm still going to clear out some more old stuff off the hard drive, and defrag and whatnot, but everything should be smooth sailing from here. It almost feels like a new computer right now.

You've been tremendously helpful. Thanks for your time.

Glad to hear and be of help, as that's why I'm here. With that card you should be able to turn up (if not all the way) most if not all of the graphic features. I'm one who lays off shadows (as in OFF), but for personal reasons and all else to the maximum in any game I own and/or play (and my card too is a 7600GS). So, just "play" with the settings and see what you can do, but let us know your results as I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to know of (or is interested in) the outcome. Good Luck and Happy Gaming!!!

Phil,

I used to turn off shadows in all my games as well as it usually seems to kill the framerate. But as I typically spend the vast majority of time in any game zoomed out as far as possible, I've been turning on shadows and lowering texture details as I can't really tell the difference from that far away. I can usually find a happy medium somewhere.

Since you seemed interested I wrote down some framerates to show my performance. Although your previous suggestions really helped a lot and everything I run is much better now, I still think I could get this machine to perform better if I knew what I was doing.

Some general observations - AA seems to have no effect on framerate. Turning the people on the max zoom out level grinds everything to a halt. No matter how big the city or how many AI cities, everything runs smooth as soon as the dense areas are off the screen. Oddly enough, it kinda seems like it runs smoother on higher resolutions. Scrolling the screen is choppy no matter what.

Anyway, here goes . . .

City = 56 houses all citizen level
unit display = off
figures display = off
AA = off
AF = off
everything else I just used the preset levels
framerates are max_zoom-medium_zoom-close_zoom

Very good and thorough report. Goes to show that when one follows advice and experiments with the game what can be accomplished, so hope others note and underand it as it's clear to me what good drivers and lack of excess programs running in the background can do.

As noted, my reasons for shadows off are different and have to do with my visual impariment. I need contrast but things have to always be "light" (in both brightness and color) for me to be able to see and enjoy what I'm playing or working with. Even minimal shadows make things so dark I cannot see details and even miss "key" figures/features. The draw on system resources is also taken into account, but not as significant as my primary reason, so I think you can understan now. Happy Gaming!!!

Phil

Phil,

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. You had already explained your situation to me some time ago on the Caesar4 board. I was just acknowledging the coincidence that I don't like shadows either. Another reason I don't like them is in my post on the ANNOpedia board titled "strange shadows."

Anyway, I'm off to play the game. Your advise was very helpful. This thread has likely run it's course so i'll leave it for the history books.

(If you don't mind. One last quick comment on those framerates would be appreciated. Do they seem about right?)

No apologies necessary. This just makes it clear for all that even one with disabilities can enjoy gaming, but they need to make adjustements to suit their own needs. So, it does not bother me to discuss it as we never know who else has a similar condtion to mine and what is possible if one is willing to ask for help as I speak from experinece. There is also one advantage that I do see things many miss with my settings set so high. Even what some would think is only a flicker literally blinds me with my settings as they are, so picture quality to me is much more important than performance.

To answer your question though, I'm not the one to ask as I seldom measure them myself. I will say (most likely due to your card (and only your card)), the medium settings do seem sluggish, but all else looks good to me anyway.

Never say a thread is "for the history books" though as there are new people coming to forums all the time and some do take time to read. This thread might help more than either of us can imagine, so I never think a thread should be "shelved" unless not truly relevant.

Sincerely,
Phil
