Hello again !

This game rules and you guys did a great job working on it so since I have a last generation computer I wondered why putting game details on "MEDIUM" with no AntiAliasing and no Anisotropic filter, my gaming experience is so "slow"

I have:

- Core2duo E6300
- Geforce 8800 GTS 640 Mo
- 1 Go DDR2 PC6400 RAM

Part of your problem is no 8000-series card is designed to work with XP Home (or even Pro standard) Edition. Up to this point unless you have XP Pro Media Center the drivers are not optimized for your operating system. So, this is part of it, but let's see what we can do.

How about a list of your background programs as many times this is one of the greatest causes of slow-donws? To provide, follow the second set of instructions in the opening post of my Sticky about probelms with the game so we can see if this is the case.

Another thing you can do is increase your pagefile (virtual memeory) to 3072 in both locations to see if this will help, but not more than 3840 as some systems are not working well with the maximum Widnows allows. Good Luck!

Sincerely,
Phil

Seriously ?? It's written nowhere on my card's manual neither on the information page of Nvidia even in the "driver download" section !

Would there be a BIG difference if I'd use Windows MCE ? Is MCE better for games also ?

Another thing you can do is increase your pagefile (virtual memeory) to 3072 in both locations

Trying this ASAP, but what do you meen by "both" locations ?

Here is a list of my background programs:

what exactly do you consider "slow" ?!?

When I move the map it freezes too often for me, not fluid...
Birds and people walking don't seem that fluid either...

If I didn't have a brand new computer that meets 2x the recommended specs for the game I wouldn't care but I think that there is a problem somewhere...

Thanks again for your implication guys ;-)

Some people reported problems with the higher end cards, is your game patched up to 1.02?

Yes my game is patched to version 1.02

To answer your questions, I watch the nVidia more than close and it is a fact when you click on Graphic Drivers, then the 8000-series, there is no options save Vista or Media Center. I can't say whether it's due to the card or nVidia not writing drivers to support your operating system, but those are the facts. To answer your questrion though, no Media Center is not better for games than what you have as many games don't support it. However the card and dirvers only support it and why I won't have an 8000-series card myself, let alone it being best supported by DX10.

When you set your pagefile (not let Windows do it as Windows undersizes it) there are two "slots"/locations. Put the exact number in both. This "locks" the pagefile rather than allows it to fluctuate on deman (which can cause problems that some aren't aware of).

As to your background programs, I'm not surprised you have issues after seeing what's there. You only need one of them; NvCpl. So, run the program again, uncheck all the rest, click Apply, click Close. Close all windows save the pop-up that appeared after closing msconfig, then click the Restart button on that window. You will reboot. Upon reboot and getting back on your account put a check in the Do Not show me this again box, cna click the OK button. Being as you either have some unknown version of your Anti-Virus or Firewall (as I did not see them), you might need to re-enable them if disabled unless you're using a "freebie" or Windows version. Once this and pagefil is done, try the game then and see how it goes and of course let us know as well.

Sincerely,
Phil

Thanks for your concern,

I do not agree with you in order to deactivate all except the Nvidia necessary.

There are only two processes not needed at startup:

- Quicktime and Java
- Soundmax tray icon

Everything else is primordial to make my system work:

- Bitdefender Antivirus (I won't last very long without it)
- Intel matrix storage manager driver and JMicron SATA raid Raid driver (Both needed for my RAID0 installation)

Anyhow thanks for your help, the problem seems to be coming from elsewhere...

Phil Walker

Think as you wil, but you are wrong. RAID is a known problem with most if not all copy-protection and so is your Nero program (as that was the biggest conflict). Your AV I had not seen and why I noted as such, so I guess that was the 3rd and 4th. All else is not needed save NvCpl. I've been at this most likely longer than you and on the phone with Microsoft direct. All the others are also accessible by execution and thus are not needed in the background as they do nothing but drain your resources. You don't have to heed, but don't contradict what is known to be fact or don't ask for help here.

Sincerely,
Phil

The main problem is your video card! There are quite a few people having this problem with the nVidia 8000 series of cards.

If you will look at the list of supported chipsets(as found on either the game box or the readme file from the game installation), you will not find the 8800 listed. Geforce 7900 is the last one on the list!

Is 1.02 going to fix the problems with the higher end cards or are they just blowing it off?

I'm not sure either, apparently the french patch didn't...

Phil Walker

Keep in mind guys that the video drivers are also part of the problem as the companies are paying so much attention to Vista and Media Center that the other operating systems aren't being supported with them. The 8000-series cards by nVidia are the first to do this, but don't think the newer generation of ATI cards won't follow suit, especially since the merger with AMD.

This is partly why my next system will still have XP Pro Standard and a nVidia 7950GTX, so I don't have to deal with this problem. Vista was released too soon and everybody is trying to fix what Microsoft did not and all the others are now starting to be ignored.

Phil

Well I've disabled EVERYTHING EXCEPT "NVCPL" and if there should of been a slight difference well I didn' notice it.

I'd be curious testing the game with a basic 7900 GT card on this same computer with the same parameters...If it worked better I'd sell this damn 8800 GTS right away !

Thanks for your help.

Phil Walker,

I saw on a previous post a discussion on Athlon/Pentium equivalents.

I have a second computer at my parents house where I'd like to install Anno and they have a Barton 3000+ (2,2 Ghz).
According to what you said the real clock (2.2 Ghz) doesn't meet the recommended specs of 3 Ghz so:

- The game won't work correctly ?
- Even if a 3000+ is equivalant to a P4 3 Ghz during tests ?
- You also said that the exception was for dualcore CPU's, how does it work for them ?

I'm talking here about recommended specs not minimum (I don't like being short)

Sorry for all these annoying questions as you've done already a lot for me but I'll have to buy a new graphic card for my parents computer in order to run the game and you seem to be damn good in game specs !!

I can run the game on 2.2 processor without any problems whatsoever. One is 3700 2.2 single core and the other is 4400 2.2 dual core.:go:

@linerjac,
Why not give it a try on your computer at your parents house?

The recommended requirements as listed on the box of the US version state - "3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent".
Listed on the box of the UK version - "3 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon 64 3500+".

I have a P4 2.6, 1 GB PC3200, nVidia 6200, WIN 2000 and I have no problems with the game on medium settings. I haven't tried it on high settings, medium is good enough for me.

Well, my "friend" (as I don't know being the only reason for the quotes), let me start by saying the only stupid question is the one that does not get asked. I'm also not "God's Greatest Gift to Mankind" with computers, but have had them longer than I care to remember, and save nVidia cards only, all types of hardware configuratrions. So, I'll do my best to answer your questions to the best of my ability with my experiences.

The improvement you should have most notice by disabling all the background programs was the smoothness and speed (most noticalbe at boot) of your system.. As to how it exactly effected the game, that I can't say, but almost every game I have and play it has helped, even though it did not "fix" anything (not that I've ever had a problem with any game I own/play). I'm sure Doober will telll you (as he's done done under my guidance) that I know how to make the best of what one has.

Far be it form me to tell you what to do, but you noted my specs on my next system and why, so no need to say more about that.

There is one thing you misstated in your direct inquirey to me. The 2.2 GHz CPU does meet the requirements of the game, so that alons should not be a problem, but I'd like to see the DxDiag of the whole system before making further comment.

As to the 3000+, that is but the potential, which means it should be able to work at that clock speed, but not with any consistancy, and I have a "beef" with AMD in this regard. Pentiums also used to state the potentials as well, but soon eliminated it and for the reason it does not support that speed all the time. If you can find an older system where Pentium stated it, you'd find they were 1.25 to 1.5 timess the stated clock speed, yet games and other applications requiring what the potential noted did not run either (and why they stopped noting it).

I'm sure you noted the game I did where this was proven and I've helped with that game even before release (via the released beta version of siad game) and on my older 1.6GHz P4 that game worked fine, not great but fine (as that was not the only thing to just meet minimums), but one with more than I had and the true rate of 1.4GHz could not get his to work and blamed the ompnay, which was his/her mistake. Long story short, I've had "practice" and experinece in helping others (as well as myself and why done to begin with) in getting the best out of their systems and why I'm aware of these specs and "test" them as best as I can. Not just on my systems (4 if you count those of my partnes), but others who have had porblems.

So, if that is the only minimum, the game should be fine as many aren't waware that if you only meet in one area but have excess in others, they work "hand in hand" and it will be compensated for.

As to dual cores now, look at if from the most logical position. Dual core is basically 2 CPUs working together (in tandum). This provides an andvantage tht the CPUs won't overhear as easily and you can almost literally add the two cores together and then you'll get the true clock spped. Not that they have any, I'll use this example; a dual core 800MB system cold run that given game but not well. 2 800s is 1.6, but you do lose a little by"merging" the two (like .1 to .l2 GHz), but not enough that it would be obvious. Anymore, it is hard to find a single cored system (unless older) and the smallest I've seen has been a 2.4GHz dual core. That alone can run any game to this point as there are notne of 4.0GHz or highter demand. Any dual core out there will run any game up to this point, but wait until quad cores come down in price! (Yes they exist even now, but as to pice ACK!) The only problem you will run into (with older games only) is they aren't set up to take advantage and were not optimized with said CPUs, but will wrok and better tna any single core will. My current PC has a 3.0GHz single core, but my next will have a 3.4GHz dual core and both are/will be hyperthreaded (added chips but not working in tandum) as well.

It's one of those cases I do keep up on technology with computers, but these have been tested and are true. The one thing out on the mrkdet that sould have been tested better was Vista, but that is another styory and why I won't have it (and a coupld of personal reaons as well).

Hope this answered all of your questions now. If not or you have more, let's take ti to PMs as I don't want to confuse or clutter the minds of those who just want to get this game working. My Best!

Sincerely,
Phil

@Dobber,
Why not give it a try on your computer at your parents house?

This is because I am sure that the game won't work since the video card doesn't meet minimum specs.

@Phil Walker,

Well thanks for this detailed answer as it completely answers to quite all my questions ;-)

I'll just have to find a cheap but suitable AGP graphic card in order to make the game work, any suggestions ?

Thanks for all :go:

Phil Walker

There are many quality AGP cards out there and many can be obtained at a decent price as well. Since I do not know your budget I'll just give you an idea, but before that note you'll need to make sure your power supply has ample wattage also. If not, you will end up "frying" not only the new card but other components as well due to the system demands not being met. The best "bang for the buck" will need 350 or more watts, so be aware of this as those can cost anywhere from 50 to 80 US dollars added to your cost if you don't have one.

Now, as to my suggestion (that will work quite well with the 350 watts with a little to spare) would be a PNY nVidia GeForce 7600GS AGP card. Make sure it's PNY though as BFG, XFX, and eVGA (all card makers for nVidia) will require more to be safe. Do note, that they will say less (the PNY 300 and BFG 350 for example), but I'm compensating for "surges" in demand of either or both the card and/or the system. I have the same model in a BFG myself and Rnett has a XFX model, IIRC (and correct me if wrong Rnett), but I have a 420 watt power supply as well. The PNY card (last I checked at newegg.com) was about $150 US + shipping to give you an idea.

If you have only 250 watts you'll be much more restricted, but there are some good cards out there. So, without knowing more this is what I'd suggest as long as you have the power supply requirements as well. My Best!

Also, as you can tell, I'm very thorough and use the plainest English I can so all can understand and with ease. Maybe not all the content, but most of the major notations anyway.

Sincerely,
Phil
