View Full Version : Disappearing exe
Hi folks
Been lurking a while. Have a weird problem: After a week or so from installing the game, the .exe just vanishes from the folder on the C drive, and of course the shortcut can't find it to run the game. A search of all files did not find it, and ended up reinstalling the game...twice now.
I now have created a "spare exe" folder with a copy of the exe file in it. Anyone else see this one?
By the way, thanks to Phil for recommending the Nvidia 91.47 drivers. The game didn't run at all with the 93.71s, and I would never have figured that out on my own.
Thanks.
Welcome to the forum, pith! :halloha:
Your problem is new to me!

Thanks for the compliment, although not needed or necessary. It comes down to much time testing and knowing what has worked best for me and to have it backed-up by others.
As to the disappearing ".exe" file, that I have not seen. It is good that you made a copy and put it in another folder though until we can figure this out. If it does not happen again, just call it one of those PC "flukes" is all I can say. If it happens again though, don't do anything with the game until you get with us as there might be a fix for it, but until seen we cannot say. Good Luck, keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again, and again, thanks.
Sincerely,
Phil
Thanks for the welcome and input. It has actually happened to me twice so far, and if it occurs again will update this thread.

We'll be here if and when, so we'll be watching. One thing it could be is if the file ended up corrupted or infected, your virus scanner caught it and dumped it into the quarantine. Just to note.
Sincerely,
Phil
Good call Phil! That's exactly what happened, McAfee identified it as a trojan on two successive, weekly scans.
So, do you think it might somehow becoming infected? Or could it be the built-in antipiracy drivers in the exe? Never had this problem before.

Was afraid of this and thought as much from the sound of it. Here's what I'd do, but up to you. First move all your save folder and files out of the game folder. Then uninstall the game (and patches) via Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. Also delete the patches (if you have them on your system. Also, delete the back-up you made of the .exe, tha game folder and the folder for the game in your start menu. Empty your Recycle Bin. Then run a complete system scan and make sure it isn't just the game. Do a disk clean-up and defragemtnt your harddrive. Then reinstall the game. Download the patches using the Save option. Do not install them until scanning them. Then install the patches and put the save folder back (overwrite if asked). What I'd do if it were me anyway, but up to you as noted. Good Luck!
Sincerely,
Phil
I have to ask this: Do you use an original version of the game without any kind of cracked exe?
If yes, it could also be a false report by McAfee. You could ask their support if they want to have a look at that exe-file to fix that in future updates.
If no, follow Phils advice and get rid of that cracked exe (it's illegal anyway)!

I am using the original version of Anno 1701 with patch 1.02 and are using the McAfee too. I am getting the same reports as pith but I do not get the .exe file deleted automatically.
The problem is more likely in the original Anno 1701 programs. I doubt if Phils suggestions will help. Better to uninstall Anno 1701 and play something else until Anno 1701 has been properly developed. First it would be a good idea to follow WaxWorms advice and consult with McAfee suuport.
Phill does not seem to believe what he is writing either. He prefers to use an almost invisible font.

Previous post reported for making insolent remarks and attacking a disabled person while not bothering to read profile or posts in the tech forums about the stupid rremarks made.
If the problem is with the game why is it only you (stupid) McAfee users are having it?! I put good money out for that piece of junk once, but never again as it was uninstalled within one week. Others don't have this problem, so if not a trojan it's the piece of junk that says it is and not the game. I rest my case.
Sincerely,
Phil

Welcome to my ignore list Phil. I am not fond of abusive personal messages.
Both of you cool it! Anymore of it and warnings will be issued, personal attacks on forum members are against the forum rules you agreed to when you joined the forum!

Well Dobber I am pretty cool already. I will just not accept abusive personal messages. I am not going to post the message I received but if any administrators are interested they can just let me know.
This is my last reply in this thread about phit's problems.
The main thing is to solve that problem and not other unimportant discussions. Would it not be better if Sunflower/Ubisoft followed up on WasWorm's suggestion and investigated various problems with anti virus software? Clearly several people have problems with that.
@Eagleclaw, if you wish that an Administrator or Moderator see the PM you received, then pick one us and send a copy of it.
The main thing in solving that problem(AV) is to get the problem to the right people.
For Sunflower's/Ubisoft or Related Design to follow up on it requires the people having the problem to send an email to technical support describing the problem they are having.
The technical help forum is a place you can start and see if others are experiencing the problem and if so maybe there has been a solution found. But for issues beyond the minor ones that user volunteers can assist with, a ticket with technical support needs to instigated via email.

(Save to address more problems to find a solution to this issus.) If Eagleclaw happens to read this (take me off ignore long enought to see it if only out of curiosity), he may forward it to you Dobber or to any other. As you know I have nothing to hide and you are well aware of my temper and dispostion especaiily when my disability is mocked publicly (and how it was takne). If a warning is due, I have no trouble with that either. I don't have to be here helping and am doing it of my own free will and choosing, but in my condition with what makes me, me, some things are not to go unanswered. I'll leave it at that and if any have problems with this and want the help I have to offer, feel free to post it (as I did nail where the problem was from the start just on what was said).
Sincerely,
Phil

Geez, didn't want to set off an uproar here.
To get back on task, I have no other infected files, so the trojan issue appears confined to involving only the 1701.exe. Phil, I am not thrilled with McAfee, but prefer it to Norton which is a huge resource hog, and I have several people using the same account to download the software, so that's what I got. I will try your suggestions though about cleaning out all traces of 1701, scanning, then reloading 1701.
Waxworm, I am definitely not using a crack exe, but thanks.
Eagle Claw, I suspect you are right about some idiosyncracy of the 1701.exe being flagged by McAfee, but who knows how long it will take to get that one figured out.
Thanks again for all the input.

Ptih, do not worry aobut it as it was not you who started the "uproar", but a thing I take very personally and not of your doing. In the week I had McAfee installed several things "slipped through", so why my remarks and that I won't have it again. We use what we can and if we choose it is our own decision and (hopefully) preference. So, keep me posted on the progress as the infection could have happened during the patch download and not exposed until executing and the .exe could have been the receiver of what would spread if kept unchecked. Also, why my thorough explantion of what to do as it could be elsewhere (not yet "seen") in the folder also. Good Luck!
Sincerely,
Phil

You did not set off anything. You just posted your problem in the community. It is to everybodys advantage that you present a problem shared by many people. It is not your responsibility how people respond to your question. I just hope that you will get your problem solved and post the solution here for everyone to see.
Good luck.
Hmmm, I think the patch may be the problem. I downloaded it from File Planet I think. Will try another source.
Thanks again to all.

Keep us posted, but also make sure to scan the file after downloading (using the saev oprion) and before installing, as if that's where the trouble is/was, this will help prevent it from happening again (we hope). Good Luck!
Sincerely,
Phil
