What do you like best? 2D or 3D? Give arguments!

I like 3D the most cuz you can go super far in detail, can rotate and zoom in, and it creates a realistic atmosphere.
BTW, i like zooming and rotating, but only if i can afford it during a battle.

In strategy-games 2D is clearly superior to 3D in my opinion.
2D-engines have lower system-requirements, can display more details and are easier to handle.

I find 3d better as it limits the risk of your units dissapearing behind objects, it also makes much more sense when dealing with a battlefield in which there are hight differences.

Right but I have seen screenshots of Rome total war and if the number of unit is impressive, when you zoom on a battle:
1- Units are (how can I say that in English...) cubic? It's not as nice as 2D units that we can see in "unit showcase" of this website.
2- Battle look like a compact mass of units. It's ugly... but I am goig to dowload the demo and I will be able to confirm that tomorow...

At the end, I am for 3D for reasons you explain but maybe without a big zoom wich reveal default.

I prefer a 2D-Engine in strategy-games, too, because of the same reasons as angryminer already said them.

Opinion 2: 3D has more details.
Conclusion: This discussion won't ever lead to a sollution.

See a soldier from KoH and some R:TW soldier.
Quod erat demonstrandum.

It is your opinion. You just believe it to be a fact like everyone does.

When you speak about 3D unit, remember units of KOH ARE in 3D. The only thing in 2D in the game is the background. If units (in unit showcase) look so nice, remember they are very little that's all, but they are in 3D in the game. It is not like Age of Empire where units where in 2D with several view angle.

I hope you understand me cause me, I don't! lol

You believe? I am sure it is the real units wich are in the game. Look at the "in game screenshot". You really think developers make this unit just for the fun? I don't think. Look Rise of Nation, it is the same type of units but when you zoom in you begin to see defaults. Wait and see!

i think we have a problem in communication here:p

We speak about strategy-games. Not about First Person Shooters where you can/want to zoom in.
Finally all 3D-scenes end up drawn twodimensional on your monitor. That's the plain reason why 2D can never be inferior to 3D-engines. At top they can be equal.

And about KoH: KoH's landscape is 3D. The units are true 2D pixmaps.

@Angryminer:
For example, i couldnt imagine RTW without zooming in. Although you normally dont have time to do it, it is soo cool. When you zoom in you can clearly hear the marching, gallopping and screaming. You can follow arrows and projectiles and see how they hit. You can follow man-to-man fighting, hear a scream when one of the two dies. This atmosphere is so amazing, and very realistic. It is just this, that 2D doesnt have. The amount of detail of the RTW units isnt even much less than the drawings in the unit showcase! When playing the demo, i hadnt had so much fun in a long time. You could say that 3D gives more freedom.

Lastly, you can clearly see that units in 3D are much more diferent than 2D, even if they end up drawn 2D.
