Well glad to know the Civ games are turn based, I won't bother with them. I'll stick to AOE2, Starcraft and 1503 AD.

The question should be....
who likes Alpha Centauri more than Civ3?

AC isn't really the sequel to Civ2, but to some, it is the superior heir to it's crown as best turn based empire builder game.

I guess I'm one of those. AC is very good. Has an excellent atmosphere to it.
Civ3 is pretty good, however, it tends to get way too slooooooow by the end.

AC is a nice game, indeed, but in my opinion it lacks diplomacy.
The AI-players tend to react irrational and change their course every 5 minutes.

aye. one thing that the civ series lacks in is diplomacy. It's always either too simplified or just absent.

as in. In Civ3... many times I've been wanting to use some form of diplomatic persuasion only to find it was not included.

One nice game for diplomacy, believe it or not, is Imperium Galactica 2. That game had a great espionage and diplomatic overtones. In fact, two of the campaigns hinged on your spying ability and diplomatic prowess.
