I personally thought stronghold was better, something about crusades i didnt like perhaps it was the way the missions where laid out!

I never played the first one. I'll tell you why I finally stopped playing Crusader though: the maps were too damn small! It got to the point where my castle and somebody else's were practically overlapping! That's just silly...

I enjoyed crusader more for the simple fact that it had a skirmish mode.

That and the fact you could smash some heathen turks :D

First one - for the simple reason that it had an original storyline, told in exactly the right manner.

crusader skirmish mode was good, however it got very predictable and computer attacks were just....crap...ai wasnt too good.

I only played the first one, and I didn't like it that much.

I preferd the first one, stronghold.
The gameplay was better and smoother.
I don't like the skirmish mode in Crusader.
It's again a rush game, and people used to
construct surrealistic castles....
... One big wall across the map with a few towers
at the end of it.

Stronghold was a lot of fun, the cow launching got annoying after a while, and I spent far too much time on a fansite than on enjoying the game. The castle building was fantastic.

My wife was extremely pregnant when Crusader was released, and I never even bought it, so my vote is biased.

Personally both games are about equal. Each game had a plus over the other. The siege weapons in Crusader added to tactics whereas the feel/look of stronghold was much more appealing. But it should be stated that Stronghold was much better of a game after the patches. However, both games had maps that were way too small. it made for single sided (from one side of the castle) attacks, I'd prefer maps large enough to enable attacks to hit you from multiple sides. There's nothing hard about training a massive army of archers and crossbow men to sit atop a wall and annoyingly diminish your armies.

Stronghold was fun at first, particularly learning how to build a castle. But its scope and small maps limited its replayability. Having become bored with Stronghold long before Crusader came out, I never bothered with Crusader.

Stronghold was a better game. It had better landscapes, nicer castles, more deer to hunt, more trees, more place to build farms and the siege mode for Singleplayer. But I play Crusader more often, because of the Skirmish-mode, especially Crusade-mode. And the new Arabian units were cool, too. I missed the wooden palisades, but the small walls were cool. And the small, high tower.
So, both were equal, but the landscapes in Stronghold were just much more beautiful.

I enjoyed playing both of them, although I must give my vote to Crusader because of the skirmish trail and the game editor. The Stronghold Crusader Warchest with the 8 additional AI's is pretty good. The new AI's in it are better than the ones with the regular Crusader.

like a few others.. I too felt the maps were way too small. I prefer nice.. big.. open maps.. with lots of gorgeous detailing.

not ones where a castle looks all distorted and just plain ugly.

yay for triple concentric wall and moat designs.

Let's see if Stronghold2 gets bigger maps, I've heard rumors about it that it is already planned.
