View Full Version : Demo in Window mode

i've seen some people here complaining about the resolution looking awful on TFT monitors with a different native resolution. that was the case with me too.
so, here is how to start the demo in window mode, the following works on Win XP.
go to
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_UserName_Here\Application Data\Black Sea Studios\Knights Of Honor Demo
and open koh.in2
there is a line reading "fullscreen = 1"
change it to "fullscreen = 0"
that's it. the demo now starts in a window and looks much much better :)
weird that the devs didn't say a word about this option. maybe it is not supported officially? (works fine on my computer)
i suppose on WinME/98/etc koh.in2 is placed somewhere else, so just search for a file named that way and edit that line.
hi stainless,
I'm playing the english demo, and the file you talk about isn't there (I have win xp)
anyway I haven't installed anything, just run 'KoHDemo.exe' resulting after unzipping the zip file
do you know what can I do?
thanks

gumli, did you substitute the "Your_UserName_Here" part of the path with the username you are using?
koh.in2 seems to be created the first time you run the demo, no matter if you installed it or not.
if you delete it, the demo will create it again next time you run it.
if you cannot find it there, then use the "find files" function (Control-F to invoke it) of Windows Explorer to search for a file named "koh.in2". i am pretty confident that there must be such a file somewhere on your hard drive.
stainless,
I searched the file in my complete 2 hard drives before post and it sin't there
strange :(

weird :(
maybe the devs will shed some light on it then?
btw, do you get the resolution refresh rate dialog every time you run the demo? if yes, then perhaps you really don't have this file for some reason (user write restrictions or something). if not, then there is no way for the file to be missing, i think :)
the demo doesn't ask me for the refresh rate every time I run it
maybe this is related with another problem I have:
http://forum.sunflowers.de/showthread.php?t=2145
sure the file isn't on my hard disk
also, I checked the windows registry, and there's nothing about koh

yea, sounds like they could be connected - the refresh rate info is stored in that same file (in my case at least)
perhaps the devs will help you better, now that they know your are missing this file. :)
I installed the demo on english on my brother's computer.
The file isn't there neither (so I can't play in a window), but he recovers his original resolution (he also uses 1280x1024) after playing the demo, not like in my computer that needs to be restarted to have it again.
All this seems very strange.
You need to set your folders to unhide hidden files to view the Application Data Folder.
thanks Shimo, but I see the Aplication Data Folder and the koh directory isn't there

That is weired, it should be there. However to be there, you need to run at least one time the game that the .ini is written.
weird that the devs didn't say a word about this option. maybe it is not supported officially? (works fine on my computer)
Not supported because it may cause on other configuration problems.
maybe I'm missing some files, my demo folder has the next files:
KoHDemo.exe
binkw32.dll
Readme.txt
11 files in the packs folder (with .pak extension)
3 dll files in the system folder
that's all, I run this .exe file directly, and it seems there's no other file about the demo in my complete hard disk

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_UserName_Here\Application Data\Black Sea Studios\Knights Of Honor Demo
What is in this folder? -> i assume you use WinXP / Win2K
Make sure you can view "hidden files"
the folder 'Black Sea Studios' doesn't exists, and for that reason there's no 'Knights Of Honor Demo' folder inside of it (or in any other part)
neither any Knights of Honor folder in any part of my hard disk (just the demo folder that I unzipped)
I can view hidden files and folders

And you started KoH one time right? And you saw the resolution dialogue?
yes, I did
and never deleted the folder we are talking about
I am going to try this tonight, because I cannot play the demo for a prolonged amount of time without getting headaches on my TFT.
The only question is, how do you scroll? You can't right, or middle click in the game to drag the map around, can you? (Like in Locomotion or Sim City.)

Frank. the english demo was in a zip file... If it wasn't installed by an executable, just unpacked to a folder.. there won't be any "install directory" just unzipped components in a folder of your choice. Same thing with registry entries.
Once you run the koh_en_demo.exe... it cofigures once.. but then runs the run. There is no "install to this directory" format... (from the zipped version)
DLing the zip off EA's FTP to see if the one off KoH main website is a zipped installer.
Demo works ok in windowed mode... it still would be nicer to be able to middle, or right-click to drag around the map, though.
