What's the difference between these weapons in gameplay terms?
Is there any way to know exact unit statistics?

You can use the onlinehelp.
bottomline, second button (royal Library)
There are all units with details (attack/defense,speed etc.)
only useful axeunits are Waräger,
best swordunits are Templar or Normans the teutonic knights are to slow.
(play german version, hope the names are correct)

Well, i have my armies equiped with long bow archers.. They are doing a fine job sofar. Somehow they even can shoot fire arrows, but i think this has to do with upgrading a certain skill of the marshal. Not sure which skill does that though. Only downer is that if my soldiers are in front, they all light up as candles when the enemy charges and my archers start shooting. funny sight though...lol :)

Long bow is 1st choice, next is heavy Xbows
@ stupormundi - how is the xbow's range compared to lbow? it seems pretty shoddy.
@ the black knight - ballistics let you shoot flaming arrows. if you upgrade the archery skill your archers won't kill your own units.

Long bows are the only "long range" weapon (exept the heavy seigeengines)
Xbows have shorter range, but they can kill armoured Inf and Kav easily and the heavy Xbows have much better defense.
Longbows: 140 distanceattack / 0 defence
h. XBows : 150 " / 30 defence
usually i use 2 Longbows and 1 Xbow squad in any infarmy.
