Upgrading all of your stuff? does it only apply to that city

WHen you upgrade sword producers or whatever....does that apply to units already created? does it only apply to those units purchased in the city after the upgrade?

and, how does one upgrade their engineering points?

When you upgrade your swordsmith to a swordmastersmithy it only changes the type of units you can build like swordmen only need a swordsmith where as a teutonic knights need a swordmastersmithy.

You can upgrade your marshals abilites when he wins a battle one of the abilites is engineering.
