View Full Version : Why is the Zoom in such a big deal?
Hello,
I hear alot of young kids, men and some older ones that think a zoom in is so neccessary. Why?
Has ANYONE here played Lords of The Realm 2? This game is very much like it, but better. Yes there is some problems and some features that are needed. Yes I am not playing the game now until the patch comes out, my reason RTW, lol and also the fact I don't want to get used to the game when things will be different in a patch.
But I must say its a Fun game, if you like Age of Empires, Age of Kings, Crusader Crap, etc. Then yes this isn't your game. But I find those game VERY boring and they lack strategy just point and click. Of course I am older, not grandpa or anything, but I was using a 486SX 33mhz when I was your age, so that puts me a different group.
This game is different in that its an older style game with some newer ideas and graphics. But its a game of the mind, yes there are some issues that make it easy right now, but those WILL be fixed. The basic concept of the game is Strategy and thinking. I think ALOT of people are SO use to point and click and super fast gameplay that they aren't really ready for a game like this, because one its TOO slow for them and two its not loaded with Eyecandy.
Yes, Loved Castles2 being able to see the castles being built and being able to build them, yes I loved Lords for its simplicity and Fun. And I believe this games falls in those catagories and more.
I'm not saying people don't have points, I just feel the comments on no ZOOM IN ruins the who game and the lack of "UBBER" (whatever that means) graphics this game ****s, shows a childish way of looking at this game and making ones point.
Last please don't take offense, this is not meant to attack anyone, just a question on how the zoom in makes such a difference in gameplay? How would you have TIME to look when so much is going on in REALTIME?

P.S. Please Add a door to the castle keep! :)

Totally agree with every point you said.
I posted some similar stuff in some other threads, so you got a brother-in-arms in my face :)
I love the game, because it reminds me of Lords Of The Realm 2 days. This game was simplier in some ways than this one, the AI stupidier than this one, yet it hold me in front of the PC for many replays.
I agree too. Zooming is absolutely not necessary. But indeed, this point of view is very much related to the kind of player you are. I personally am addicted to the strategy type: after a stressful day at work I don't feel the need to search the stress once again. That's why I am not afraid about turn based games or other games with a slower pace.
I believe most of the actual games - even strategy games - flee to easy in better graphics, 3 D, zooming... But real good gameplay has more to do with psychology, how you can hold the attention of the gamer. That's why I believe KoH could be a better game if the AI is improved a lot, if there are more unexpected events, etc. But let there be no misunderstanding: KoH has a good potential to become a superb game.
Glad some of you guys agree.
What would make my day is after the other fixes, is if they add a door to the keep and maybe a second view setting. I feel the game in the battle sequence is too close. I would prefer to see the whole castle in one screen. Don't really need a zoom out but kinda like Conqueror 1086AD distance. There you have the battlefield and the men where small! I like seeing the whole battle, just kinda feels funny when everything is that close.

Anybody here ever play Conqueror 1086AD?
I remember I had my packard Bell 486 that I upgraded to 66mhzMX (Math coprocessor) from a 33SX and I went down and paid $100 for 4mb of Ram to give my system 8mb so I could play the new games coming out. The onboard video was ok, I think it was a trident 256k.
Goth how times have changed! Companies use to make their living by selling RAM! :)
Anyway anyone ever play that game or Castles & Castles 2?
Developers you every play those games?

You mean 486-66DX, because I personaly dont recal MX version of 486, there were 486-33SX and 486-66DX. Dont you confuse them with first pentiums with MMX technology? LOL
Hm castles yeh? I never liked the original game, somehow I found it boring to built a castle for 90% of the time and then just watch enemy gets killed. I mean, no battle control, only "one screen" you there you build the castle available... Well, was not much fun for me. Defender of the Crown was way better as a single player game, and shortly Lords of Realms came out, and Warlords was the true hit then you want to play with a friends.
So castles, even castles 2... nah. Nothing special, just ideas, but pretty boring games.
i totally agree with wot ur sayin it1956 and i'm still a teen so its not just age group thing
Has ANYONE here played Lords of The Realm 2?
Yes I did !
And I agree with you that a zoom is not important.
There are much more important issue's to improve this game.

"Has ANYONE here played Lords of The Realm 2?"
Still do, actually. As a matter of fact, there are elements in that game that I wish could be found in this one.
I don't care for a zoom in feature either. I want a zoom OUT feature. I want a better view of my armies and their relative positions with the enemy from a distance..
Lurking, Same here! I already stated in several posts about zoom out for the battlefield or even a switch to allow a more arial view of the battle. But no one from the devs responded, same with the door. ;(
I can't figure it out they respond to all the whining about a zoom in but a good Idea like a door or farther out view of the battle field doesn't even warrant a reply?
Lords 2 Can't play on WIN2K or XP so there you go, anyway by the time Lords3 came I had NO interest at all! The minute they said realtime all time I said forget it, too much to chew off, I knew they would fail, plus they NEVER gave any info of the game for years!
As for Stronghold, It fell short in some ways, castle building could have been better and the DEV team had real attitude problems! They could have helped the community more but all they are interested in was money. I will not buy their next game.
Conqueror 1086AD was fun, it was a mix of field battles, and first person Castle raids and Tournaments! But alas Sierra made no patches for the game. My favorite Medieval games would be.
1. Castles 2, you conquerored other areas.
2. Lords 2 of course. lol
3. Conqueror 1086AD if you haven't played this one you missed out!
4. Stonghold, but fell short in alot of areas.
And possibly this game, thats why I hope they add a few features we liked from the other games. I paid $80 to get this game in the USA so, I am waiting patiently until the patch comes out, I played the Demo and Liked the game alot! At first it was hard until I figured out all the exploits!
OSDSET, Glad to hear your one of US who like a game of the mind and not Eyecandy and Clickfest. 8)
I hope a Dev member or Webmaster would reply.

"Lords 2 Can't play on WIN2K or XP so there you go,"
I didn't know that. I'm still running 98. You just gave me a reason not to upgrade. Eventually I'm sure I'll have no choice, but for now...
" anyway by the time Lords3 came I had NO interest at all! The minute they said realtime all time I said forget it, too much to chew off, I knew they would fail, plus they NEVER gave any info of the game for years!"
I know what you mean. I watched the Lord3 site for years. It was really kind of a train wreck. The game had potential. In certain ways it was very similar to KOH. But it was like a very bad bizzaro version of KOH.
"As for Stronghold, It fell short in some ways, castle building could have been better and the DEV team had real attitude problems! They could have helped the community more but all they are interested in was money. I will not buy their next game."
Well, I can't really agree here. I had nothing but positive expereinces with the DEV team for Stronghold. And don't forget, they are the same ones that brought us Lords2. I still play SH frequently (even today). I'm very much looking forwatd to the sequel that was recently announced.
"3. Conqueror 1086AD if you haven't played this one you missed out!"
I'm going to have to track trhis one down. I'm unfamilar with it.
"I hope a Dev member or Webmaster would reply."
Well, even if they don't I imagine they have seen the posts.

i've seen this thread ... didn't answered yet because i've no suitable answer ;(
i never played any of these games, but i cannot tell if frank or BSS played them.
but i think one thing is for certain. the ideas and suggestions here in this board are read by me and/or the devs. we cannot and especially BSS reply to all of them. many of the here presented ideas would cause a lot of work and are far more than for patch. maybe take a look at the list of lord qudus.
i simply don't know or even decide what will happen next to KoH, like an addon or if there will be a KoH2 ...

I played the Conqueror 1086AD. A friend once had it and then I was never able to find a CD of it. I downloaded it from abandoned-ware sites, but it was not ripped well enough and allowed victory only by conquest, because it crashed the game when you had to joust, so I was never able to reach the find-the-dragon end. I would appreciate any information on how I could get one full version.
As for the game the battles were quite bad, but the rest of the game, the coutry map and all it's details were very well done. The example that a 2D game needs not a bunch of resources and a ultra-fast CPU to have a nice look.
Thats for the response Webmaster! :hello:
Here is a link to get the game. I recommend to anyone still using win98 to atleast play it. And to the devs it would hurt, I have NEVER seen a Game since that mixed RTS and FPS! It was really revolutionary at the time You COULD EVEN BUILD YOUR OWN CITYS. lol Just had some bugs needed a small patch. Games were simple back then and didn't have bug problems like today.
You know I really loved the Intro to Lords 2 It was loaded with medieval conquest, My favorite intro was Lords 2 for a medieval game. Though KOH was very good, Lords 2 had errie music.
Here is the Ebay listing.

Thanks for the info, but there is only one small problem. I don't have a credit card to pay with and for Bulgaria still there is no 'pay on delivery option'. So apparently it's of no use to me.
