Feudal Knights, Teutonic Knights, and Crossbowmen.
For all those who think that the asians were stronger than the europeans read carnage and culture. And hit and run dosen't work like people think.
hit 'n' run works really effectively. If you have enough space where to run! :go:

Longbowmen are teh ****z0r.
4 groups of longbowmen, protected by a box of 4 regiments of normans so they can't reach the longbows and one squad of Feudal Knights to rape any archers the opponent might bring.

It worked for Mongols who by the way had the largest empire in the world :eviltongu and any partisan warfare which is arguable the most effective type of warfare is hit n run tactics.

But let's not get personal feelings involved and stay on the topic.

Roman Infantry - You get 40 per squad. Atlhough Valagerians are way stronger.
Steppe Cavalery - You can dwindle the number of enemies by shoting all your arrows before chargin with your swords.
Any range unit above bowmen would do fine as long you protect them with your foot men.
Ah i really enjoyed reading your strats, guys. I started playing KoH only a week ago, so i'm quite green @ it, i guess. Though, i am a big fan of the 'Total War' series and it helped me a bit with KoH too.
In my first and current game, i started as Wessex. Soon enough i conquered anglia, wales, and then the whole Ireland and went up north and conquered the whole British Isles. It seems, i am now the only one who can muster Longbowmen.
All my battles boil down to: 4 or 5 squads of Longbowmen, the rest is Man-at-arms and 4 Ballistas. With alll the 'ranged units' upgrades, the enemy rarely has the chance to come even close to my lines ('the enemy fears us, Lord!). If/when they do, the ballistas have their day. The only unit that stubbornly tries to rush my general is the enemy general. Just a couple of ballista bolts and he is pinned to a tree and all is over. Only if i am badly outnumbered, i need to employ my MAA's.
My question: i see you enjoy fighting with cavalry. How are you using your mounted units? In Medieval TW my horse units were mostly pursuing the fleeing enemy and cutting them down to prevent rallying, or to flank some already engaged enemy batallion etc. Now in KoH the white-clad routed units are sacred: noone can touch them. Its really funny to watch all those men in their white pyjamas running through my own rows of angry hardened man-at-arms or highlanders. I swear i hear them giggle every now and then.
Cheers,
CHAZZ.

I use my cavalry mainly to protect my main army from enemy flanking-attempts and to start my own flanking-maneuvers if possible. When there are no enemy-squads flanking my army I let my cavalry wait at the sides of my army until the enemy is in archery-range. Then I move the cavalry forward while the hand-to-hand fight at the main army starts. When the enemy infantry is fighting my main army I order my cavalry to charge at the enemy archers. As soon as they flee the cavalry engages in the fight at the main army. The morale penalty from my troops on the front and the rear is so high that the enemy troops usually surrender at this moment and the enemy general has to engage in the fight.
Battle won. :go:
