Hey ,
I have Anno 1602 Gold Edition English version ( i think ) Windows XP. The problem is:
If i play with sounds the game will crash in a few minutes , like when a battle starts or when it changes songs often. So i have to turn the "Songs" off , not the effects. Thats really strange ? But we have another computer too in the house that is very slow and uses windows ME , it never happens there.

Anno has sometimes problems with Windows XP computers. Most of them can be solved if the hardware acceleration for the sound and graphic cards is set to zero, and if the sound and graphic drivers are up to date.

or simply turn of sound & music (EDIT: but that's boring... ).
btw Is it possibly to play the tunes from the game in an audioplayer outside Anno1602? I have tried Winamp and mediaplayer but the sound is heavily distorted?

You can download the music in MP3 format from http://www.anno1602.de/english/ (downloads section).

yes i know , that whas just what i was goin to do . But i think the music is in the anno file too i ain't sure.
EDIT: No they arent.
Still got problems with the sound? I had problems with my sound at first running it on win xp. I no longer have problems with the game except for the occaisional flicker when switching songs.

And what did you do to solve the sound problem?
I changed windows xp to use the program as if it were running on windows 95. I never had problems with it again. I never did have a sound problem..Although the game does lag a bit in between songs.

Ah... the compatibility mode for Win98, right? That means that it also works for you... (Sunflowers recommends not to use the compatibility mode.)
Really? It works just fine for me. I have no problem what so ever..except that yesterday night the game did slow down to the point where it might as well have froze. But i was able to save and exit. Anyway yeah it does work for me.
odd...latley i've been experiencing something similar. I dunno why. But it seems to lag a lot when switching songs now. Sometimes it nearly freezes. I say nearly because it doesn't completley freeze, but moves really slow. It took maybe 5 to 10 mins while in this state just to save my game so I could exit.
The problem might be with your disk. Have you tried playing the music files with a different program? If the file doesn't play, then it might be a problem with the data on the disk, rather than a problem with your computer settings.

I got so tired of the 1602 soundtrack after the first few weeks I played.
I suggest turning off the 1602 music and listen to something else.
AC/DC always works for me. It goes good with cannon-fire too!
Yeah, eventually I just turned off the music. Its odd though. A lot of the problems i read about on this board seem to happen. My game kept crashing when I got attacked by pirates. Probably just because of the video... It works just fine now that I've turned off the music and videos though.

That's not a bug, it's the pirate's secret weapon  .
"Pay money or we'll crash your game!"

Its probablly true. But since the pirates are set to re appear, even if you do pay protection, you still get attacked by their ships...which is odd. Oh well. As long as they don't crash my game I don't care.

No. If you pay protection, you will not be attacked - except if you attack them. After a certain time, the pirates will of course accept fresh tributes... or attack you. So, check their warehouse more often.
If you buy something for you, they will also lower the protection price. So it might be useful to set an autotrade route to them to buy food... Or you leave a ship with some wood or alcohol under a white flag. If they steal the goods, they will not attack for a while.
In principle, the pirates behave like a moderate angry computer player: The thumb goes down by the time - but you can improve your relations to them by paying money or by trading.
Concerning your sound/video problem: Did you try to lower the hardware acceleration for your sound and video cards? - You may also test that together with disabling the compatibility mode for Win98.
