Welcome to the board, gamenerd. :halloha:
I know this error from the German Basic version of Anno... So, could you please state your exact version of the game, please (i.e. language and if it is a basic/gold edition)?
Edit: You may also try the Anno Installer from Ghost Walker (direct download: http://www.newscenterx.de/downloadassistent/dlass.php?action=dload&id=28) or use the instructions given here (http://www.anno1602.de/english/support_main.html) under the link ANNO 1602 with Windows 2000 and XP (sorry, but I cannot put a direct link to that page here).
I have just gone through a hard drive reformatting(because I bought Windows XP Pro). I installed Windows XP, then updated all drivers and did all Windows updates and service packs. I first installed Anno 1503 and it worked no probs, I then installed 1602, no problems with the install. The first time I started the game it exited back to desktop. but once I assigned(in Properties) Windows 95 compatability mode and run in 256 colors, I have had no problems. I did have 1602 AD Gold(US version0, that may be the difference.
Also, do you have administrator rights in XP, or are you just assigned as a user?

OK, so try the manual installation or the Anno installer by Ghost Walker...

@gamenerd: Please post here if GhostWalker's XP Installer works for your version, thanks!
There are also patches for the two dutch versions on 1602 Support Site (http://www.anno1602.de/english/index.html?downloads/download_patches.html), but they address bugfixes, not installation problems.
You'll also find an answer to the most important question: "Hoe krijg ik mijn soldaten op het schip?"

I had the same problem. so i installed the patch and - voila - installation complete. wow, I can play, I thought, but NO.... Now it says: Please insert the original Anno 1602 disc.
Hello?!?! It IS the original disc.... why am I not allowed to play? :bash:

Hi keks-dose, welcome to the board!
Are you using the same CD-ROM drive for playing as you were during the installation? Or could the drive letter have changed for another reason?
The CD-ROM drive letter is stored in the registry. Look for an entry named HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ANNO1602 and check the key CDROM_DIR.
For what it is worth, I just tested the GhostWalker installer using the original United Kingdom version of "Anno 1602" (just the original - not the add-on or gold edition or 1602 AD) onto Windows 2000 SP4. And it works well.
