First game:
started out as Norway and played sweden against denmark. ALl I did was march in and out of thier lands until they went to war with each other, then I swooped in and took both. By that time denmark had eatten away at mainland Europe, so when I marched across. I was welcomed with open arms by the remains of Germany. At the same time, the Scotts took over the Islands and France and the Nors marched down toward kiev. Once We three controled North Europe, and Asia. I used my alliance with the Nors to walk in behind them and take northern Kiev. They would attack the town while just on the next hill , my troops camped. When they where driven back, My army would walk in and kill off the remaining town watch.
I drove teh scots back across the bay and gained control of all of the northern Europe Coastline. Brittany asking for help, agrees to be vialage. They then honor the treaty they had with the remains with of Germany and declared war on me. Now this is funny becuase not only where they fighting a losing battle against my forces and the scott forces. (by this time I had granted the scotts a treaty.) But Brittany was still paying me funds as a Vialage. They basicly funded thier own death. The only rebels I seem to have pop up is in the old land of Germany and the scot forces that march across there to thier conquest of Italy, are kind to stop and kill them. So I can focus all my troops for my march into spain.
When The dusk clears, Norway shall control all of Europe.
Every kindom I have taken has been by conquest. I am not having any luck using spies and such. Even once I had to fight my own spy on the battlfield cuase I did not want to turn the army into rebels.
I am still on my first game playing as Naples. I find it a challenge to maintain kingdom growth across the sea to the east and west. I suppose the logical thing would have been to push north in the beginning but I had a pact with Papacy who owns the territory. He has since gotten himself all but eliminated and I am now securing peace to my east and west fronts to make the push north. So far on default difficulty the game seems quite challenging. I have read how others think the game is too easy. I imagine they are players who are skilled strategy gamers. I find the difficulty just about right so far and I am not new to strategy games (started with Civ I). I do think I need to move up one level though on my next game.
I was also wondering if someone could explain the general differences between the three time periods in KOH. I am not up on my history
Thanks

I usually start out with any country on the edges of the map, because then I've don't have to watch my back when I start expanding.

the main diference is in political map as all of us know :)
but there are also minor diferences:
in late period towns are generally more developed than in early
in early period some uinits such as teutonic knights are not available.

I started as the highlands because Scotland was never a true power in Europe, and i have conquered, Spain, North Africa, France, Germany, Italy, and am working my way East at the moment. Its still ammusing to me to see highlands defending my citys in Africa.

My first game I played as Highlanders just for fun. But I made some dumb mistakes and then just experimented around to see what happened when I tried different tactics or made unusual decisions.
My second game (still ongoing) is as Lotharingia. They start out with three provinces right between France and Germany. I absorbed France through warfare and then Britanny and Cornwall (yay, longbowmen!). Germany got swallowed up by Sweden and Poland with some minor states rising up as well. I was actually doing quite well - outpacing all other Kingdoms with income and advantages. Healthy and frequent donations to the Papacy had just about everyone, in Europe, who wasn't a mortal enemy adoring me....then I decided (very prematurely it seems) to press my claim for Emperor. That lead to war with several countries but primarily Sweden, right on my doorstep. I poured money into my minor allies and even granted a couple adjacent provinces. With Spain keeping the various Moorish rivals in Iberia occupied and the Highlanders helping me out against Sweden, as well as the Papacy marching on Burgundy, we did pretty well. Killed the king of Sweden on the battlefield and his conquests splintered. Germany and Denmark reemerged, swinging, and I tossed more gold to them.
After taking a couple mainland provinces from Sweden I made peace with all my adversaries and was rewarded with a message saying that since I survived the hostility of all the great powers I was allowed to represent myself in the regular vote for Emperor (which happens every so often) and I made some very solid allies in the process. But financially and militarily I've got a good deal of rebuilding to do.
Anyhow, it's been challenging. Sometimes things can feel a bit repetative (battles against rebels and generally winning any engagement I get into) but I'm playing on normal difficulty. Hard should spice things up a bit. Can't help but thinking more events (ala Crusader Kings) would keep me a bit more on my toes.

I am currently playing my first game as Normandy and doing well (Uniting England, Ireland and most of modern day France). I chose them for my first game for many reasons (I am going there in a month or so!) but I liked the idea of starting with a one province nation in France with the ability to unite England.
I am thinking for my next game to try maybe a crusader state… just because they are so fascinating.

I just got the game, but the Crusader States, Teutonic, and Germanic states all interest me. Still learning the game itself so have not play a full game yet, but probably play Pomernia first as I am of German descendent and have traced one side of my family to that area.

So far, I've played only in the early period with Bulgaria, Kazan (for a short while) and Armenia and in the last period with Turnovo (for my AAR).
Mirco, then what's left to you - Byzantium, Bulgaria..?

I do use both depends on the game. But if there could be a "boy named Sue" why not a "lady named Ulric"

My favorite starting point is high or late era. That is because there are many nations that struggle for power and I like to see mighty nations rise and fall. Being a 5-province-wimp in direct neighbourship of a 28-province giant is always nice  .
But note, in original KoH I like the early era more, because without any modifications to the rebels many nations equals cluttered map.

Denmark,Sweden,Russia,communists... Estonia only 50-100 years old  those soviet russians ruined Estonia. Now Estonia is a small country with S*IT encomony
