View Full Version : What the Hell Is Up With Crusades?
All right, so I got a Pope who is in my Court, right? I tried excommunicating a few kingdoms, but that didn't work seeing as they were 100% catholic (and the pope would leave my court each time, forcing me to reload..). That's cool I guess, so I excommunicated a couple that had some muslim/orthodox provinces.
Then I tried to call a Crusade against excommunicated Bohemia and wouldn't you know it, the Pope got all fussy and left my court. My only question is ... WTF?? The pope is my puppet so why can't I call a damn crusade against people who are ALREADY excommunicated, and WHY Does the pope care for someone excommunicated?
I guess its a bug.. if he loves them so much why doesn't he ex-excommunicate them
Well, this is weird, I reloaded and this time without removing "The Pope Is Dead" Icon I started trying to excommunicate people and I wound up excommunicating half the world.
By the way, is it bad if I excommunicate everyone? I can still get instant crusade armies right? :)
Also, what does a Orthodox icon with a Crown on top of it mean?? Leader of the Orthodox church or something?

It means this cleric is a patriarch and the country is hence independent from the patriarch in the Byzantine Empire, which makes higher morale to their units.
Ah, ok, but that still doesn't explain why the bloody Pope won't let me make crusades against excommunicated kingdoms!
Edit: lol my own pope excommunicated me, and I didn't even do anything this time!! WAY TO GO

Imagin the german president say to pope Benedikt XVI: "Make everyone declare war on the US. I don't like Bush!"
Do you think that would work?

Good point Angryminer
But look at History the Pope been the puppet at times for certain leaders. King Philip pretty much destoryed the Templar Order so he could get all its wealth, and remove a loan that he had with them, On 20 March 1312 Philip went to Vienne and two days later Pope Clement held a Consistory in which he annouced his decision to suppress the Templar Order out of his own "plenitude of power".
So yes the Pope Clements at this time was no more than a tool of the French Royal policy and did what King Philip either 'suggested' or demanded.

And that's the way it works in KoH. Often the pope follows your command, but when they are completely out of the political frame the pope will not foolow your command.

How do you call for a crusade without sending your own armies? When my cleric is Pope I can excommunicate a kingdom by clicking on him or making my marshal a crusader by clicking on them. Is that all i can do? how do I start a crusade and get someone else to go on it?
