I know nothing of programming and i was wondering how difficult it is to mod the game to make a few minor changes. For instance, prices from trade and unit stats.
It's a pity they were not .txt files that are written in english.

I am kinda interested to know as well :)

...and this and even more is in my mod, so if I could manage it, you would too :go:
just look at thread where we describe what can be edited and where (well, maybe it's not completely up-to-date, but the most important modding files are there (for trade look at econst.in2, for unit stats in units.xls+copy the edited result to units.txt)
PS: I don't know what do you mean by .txt files not in english. They are

Take a look at Tempest's PakMan and the mods that are already around. Also, there is a sticky thread in the modding section that describes some of the scriptfiles.
When there are problems, head back here. We usually don't bite...

but
how do i get that file back into the .pak file?

You don't need to. If you had followed my second advice (looking at other mods) you would have seen that it isn't necessary to put the file back into the pak as long as it's placed in it's original directory.

Angryminer and Elvain are not human, cos ....... modding is hard. How did they ever work out how to do it ? Maybe i'm just thick, i dunno. There are still things i don't understand. Do i need to open a new folder in the KoH to place my edited files in ? and what does ( as Elvain posted "for unit stats in units.xls+copy the edited result to units.txt") mean ? Is that english ?
Even your mods have sub-directories that don't exist in my KoH directory, what with all the defs and stuff ? Do i just copy everything in your zip file to the Koh directory ?
Illuminatus!

Once you have PakMan (there're links in posts #4 and #7 of this thread; it's also in at least one or two of the stickies in this forum), you can see (and thus edit) some of numbers, values, and texts that are...some...of the blood and bones of KoH.

You need PakMan...see above.
and what does ( as Elvain posted "for unit stats in units.xls+copy the edited result to units.txt") mean ?
The different values (attack, chance-to-kill, defense, etc.), or statistics, for the military units of the game are in the files: units.xls (an Excel spreadsheet file) and units.txt (a text file, usually opened for editing ("modding") with Notepad or Wordpad). Elvain is suggesting that, if I want to edit some these unit values, I could edit the .xls file as desired and then copy the new, edited text to the .txt file - the .txt file has some pretty confusing formating that makes it more user-friendly to do as Elvain suggests than to try and edit the .txt file as it is.

I worked it out!!! .. i did download pakman, but, i wasn't saving the files into the default directory as i didn't want to spoil the game. I now understand about the defs directory and i can now proceed to mod my game.
I think i may leave the unit stats unchanged for now but i have altered the armory so that the chainmail upgrades to the scale and then the plate. It's logical when you think about it and it frees up those valuable slots.
