Does anyone else wonder why a Cathedral requires an Ink Maker instead of Ink? In other words, the production building instead of the product itself? There are other examples of this.

I presume that it is done in order to restrict the number of provinces that get some of the more advanced structures, but this seems like a clumsy way to do it. Perhaps I am missing something.

Thanks.

All building prerequisites in the unmodded game depend on previous buildings not products. If the product were to be a requirement then if you loose access to the product (trade agreement broken or province where product is made is lost) then the building will no longer be supported and will crumble. I think that some mods do make this change.

It also means that the really advanced buildings such as cathedrals are incredibly rare since you need the exact combination of 3 out of 3 resources. Good? Bad? dunno. I guess its all in how you look at game balance.

Ah, I did not think about the aspect of losing a resource. Good point. On that note, what happens if you raze a structure that is a requirement for another? I guess I should experiment for myself...

If you go to take out a required building, all buildings that need it will show red and if you get rid of it they all go
