View Full Version : Do you ever restore The Papacy?
I have conquered Rome a couple of times but I could never find a reason to restore the pope. Do you?

It depends, personally, i find it a nuisance, other than the gold bonus to catholic kingdoms. My clerics always become the Pope, which means I must get another cleric in one of the knight slots or terminate relations with the Pope. I don't use his power much anyway.

I usally make my king or a prince a cleric and do so he get 5 stars. Members of the royal family cant become pope....
I find that the Pope is more of a nuisance whether he is part of my court or not. In my current game I managed to weaken the Papacy enough with my spies that Zeta managed to take them out (I love it when other countries do my dirty work). I am going into Itally with my armies now to make sure that no one tries to restore the Papacy.
How do you restore the papacy? Unless like you have Rome as a province and your king dies and you have no heir and local nobility takes over and the Papacy is restored am I missing something?
I think when you take Rome from another faction you get the option to restore the Papacy. Won't have time to try it until this weekend though :-(

Whenever Rome isn't controled by Papacy, and you conquor it a question will ask if you want give it back to Papacy (if Papacy still has other provs). If Papacy is complete knocked out and you conquor Rome a similar box will pop up asking if you want to restore Papacy. By doing this a new pope is elected and all non-excommunicated kingdoms will like a lot.

unless your a muslim!
One reason I like to play "the infidils" is that it gives me great pleasure conquering Rome, eliminating the pope and papacy in the processo. (realy dont have to worry about my relations with the rest of europe - they´re catholic anyway so..... "jihad" )

OK. Now I want to play a MUSLIM nation and then conquer Rome, and then I will convert the province into Islam..... muahahahaha! Does that mean that if a new Papacy is restored, the Pope will be Muslim? LOL

It might be possible that a rebel-army pops up, liberates the province of Rome from you and declares independence as the Muslim Kingdom of Rome. But that would be weird...

Its worth a try!!!!
Played sicily in early stage which is muslim, invade nearly all catholic europe - papacy included. Then tried the following experiment: converted papacy (city of Rome) to muslim, along with some other cities, then converted my state religion to catholic (to bring about civil desorder).
RESULT: in two tries, the first resulted in all the provinces mantain the muslim religion but Papacy went catholic automatic!!!
In my second try, all provinces mantained the muslim religion including the city of Rome. Papacy waas not restored and in its place apeared the emirat of Rome?
So for now all I can say is that there is a 50/50 chance that the papacy can be automaticly restored even after its been converted to another religion!
Is it a bug, or does it make sense after all?

Rome was converted by a muslim nation into a muslim prov. I recaptured rome and restored Papacy and rome automaticly went to catholic.

Roman Inquisition, anyone?
I was playing as Golden Horde, my spy was crowned king, handed over the kingdom, Papacy was gone. Earlier in the game I had given Sicily to the Italy in order to get a peace treaty so I could be at peace and lessen nostalgia. Byzantia took Sicily from Italy, 2 or 3 Kings later Byzantia's King died with no heir. Byzantia's Kingdom separated into about 5-6 different nations. Sicily became the Papacy and the Pope was restored(my alliance pact with the Papacy was still in effect as well).

Was Sicily ever owned by Papacy?
Was Sicily ever owned by Papacy?
That I do not know, I had owned it a long time before giving it to Italy, perhaps Papacy took it from Italy and Byzantia took it from Papacy, but I do not know. Sometimes a province can change hands 3 or 4 times and you not know it since you are busy with other things.

I always tried to destroy the Papacy, regardless of what religion I was.
I recently figured out a way to use the Pope more efficiently, so I would try to reinstate the Papacy if I was playing as a Catholic kingdom.
I haven't tested this, but if you are the only Catholic kingdom, other than the Papacy, I would think this would allow you to always control who the next Pope would be ... as long as you had a Cleric that could be promoted. I'm not sure what happens when you don't have a Cleric.
As I outlined in the Crusader Armies post, you can call Crusades against infidel kingdoms and send multiple Crusader armies against them. You can hire inexperienced Marshals and convert them into Crusaders, and hold on to your experienced Marshals for actual conquest of these provinces. It's easier to declare a Crusade against kingdoms the Papacy is already at war with.
