Use trade-agreements (with big nations) + traders (trading for gold) to make the money flow.

1. Switch to the political view.
2. Look for some big nation.
3. Start an audience with the big nation and offer them a trade-agreement (if a trade-agreement is already existant no need anymore). If your request is denied, ask another nation.
4. Once a promissing trade-agreement is established hire a merchant.
5. Click on his picture in the royal court and select "Trade with kingdom".
6. Select the nation with the biggest number beside it from the new list.
7. Click "Trade for gold".
8. Jump for joy screaming "Yeehaw! I'm filthy rich!!" .

Hire a cleric, make him govern the specific province and then click his picture and select "Adopt population". That costs 100 books per 1 point of nostalgia.
The other way is to wait until the nostalgia goes away by itself  .

Also, if you are a small kingdom (which you said you are) you might be a vassal. This means you are constantly paying 1/2 of your income to the "owner" of you. You can find out if you go to the political view and the main view (the button in the top-left of the choices down in the bottom right of the screen. It has countries all different colors and striped ones are vassals to the country they share a boundary with but have no dark separating line. If you are one of them click on your "owner" and click declare independence. You will not ba a vassal anymore but you will go to war with them and lose KP, not always bright if you are very weak.
