I've just purchased Knights of Honor and am having a very good time so far. The only thing that seems lacking to me is the manual. There is a lot of information that seems not to be included. So some questions:

1) How do I get other countries to become my vassals?

2) In combat, do you get bonuses when you attack from the sides or back? I assume so since there are a few mentions about "avoiding flanking maneuvers" in the manual, but it is never explicitly stated.

3) Can missle units hit friendly troops? Not stated, but it seems like it may be happening.

4) How many battles does it take for troops to gain experience? What determines how much experience they gain? I've got a bunch of Viking and Bowmen squads that have been in multiple battles and nobody has gained any experience at all as far as I can see. The Marshals have each gained 2-4 skills but the troops still show as no experience.

5) My king just died and when the Prince took his place I have no family left. If I marry off my King will he start having kids? If not, how do I avoid having no family in the future?

Thanks! I'm playing as Norway on Medium, Early Period. Denmark granted me Oslo to avoid a war and I've made a foothold in the British Isles by taking the Highlands. Money is pouring into my coffers and my spy finally infilitrated Sweden as a Marshal so I think I'm in great shape, but these questions are nagging at me.

1) beat them to the near finish and propose peace (not white peace, but with demand of them as vassal...you might get a princess in the mix.. ) I'd also ask for money, and give it right back to them so that they like you...may be enough movey that you are in the green...then plant a spy in their court to make sure you have a hold.

2) don't know, I usually use auto combat

3) yes, assuming so, since marshal's archery skill level 2 allows your troops to be imune from (friendly) archery cross-fire

4) Don't know about this one: I've noticed that units who take a lot of action (casulaty) get promotion somewhat faster then others... and units wo were left over when the rest of my army was trounced end up with stars after a victory.

5) Mary the new king and get kids... and then mary your crown-prince, that way he gets started early on the baby-making process...

2. Definately yes. When being flanked a squad in line-formation will only fight with a small part of it's force, so it is easily overwhelmed. Also the flanked squad suffers a morale-penalty.
3. Yes. Use the "hold fire"-button to stop your archers from killing your own men.
4. The units gain experience from actual fighting. For each killed enemy the squad gains a very small bit of experience. Also the squads will get a bonus when they kill an enemy marshall, prince or even king.
