merry christmas to everybody.
On the 7th you say? How come?
Well, I posted some question in the Quiz thread, our church still uses the old Julian calendar, and the difference between Julian and Gregorian is 14 days. So, 7th january is 25th december, and it's Christmas! And we have two new years, one on 1st, and other one on 14th.
We don't say "Merry Christmas" for Christmas, but say (on the day, not before or after): "Hristos se rodi", which means something like "Jesus is born". And the reply to that is "Vaistinu se rodi", which means something like "Indeed, he is born". And the whole custom related to the Christmas is complicated and long, I can write about it now...

Hah, Xuca, when I was translating the things for the Serbian-Bulgarian war I noticed that the differences in the dates are indeed around 12 days, not 14 as I thought before.
And btw you say "Hristos se rodi" and "Voistina se rodi" on Christmas? That's quite funny. cuz it reminds me more of Easter - then we say "Hristos vozkrese" and "Voistina vozkrese" ("Christ has arisen" and "Indeed He has arisen").
And one thing - when do your gypsies celebrate the new year?
P.S. Merry Christmas to you all (although wasn't Christmas around 24th-25th of December?)!

the difference was 12 days till 1900, and now it's 13 until 2100, and so every 200-300 years.
and we also say on Easter "Hristos Voskrese( or Vaskrs)", and reply "Vaistinu Voskrese(Vaskrs)"
and you, Bulgarians, use the Gregorian calendar? I always thought you too use the julian one.

Interesting. I hadn't thought there was another calendar like this. :silly:
I should really inform myself more about other nations. ^^'
