When I play byzantium the army always have very poor morale and routs easily. why is this?

It's likely because you have a dependent Orthodox faith. I believe you need to claim independence in order to remove that penalty (and for that I think you need a Patriarch).

Well, you can't really expect courage from the Byzantines, you know... :wink:
But it's really because of the religion - Orthodox countries have a morale penalty (and I really don't know why :scratch: ).
Byzantium can't be dependent, and if it were, it were dependent of itself.
indeed, and the book says that all orthodox countries suffer from morale penalty but byzantine not :s strange, I sometimes can't win against muslim rebels, even with my catapracts :s
That's strange..lose against rebels with Cataphracts? Do you replenish their food? Support with archers? Camp for a while?

All orthodox subordinate to the church of constantinople suffer a morale penalty....IIRC you still need a cleric to become your Patriarch even as the byzantines. Though Im out of touch sinc BF2 took hold.

I'd say no
Byzantium doesn't need a patriarch, no, nor does it suffer penalties. It only has the boni from orthodoxy.
