Metal Gear Solid and Half-Life are FPS. They always have much better graphics for some reason. If you can raise RTS level to that - the flag in your hands.

If Titan's Quest is so good (I heard of it, but didn't play yet), what is wrong with Paraworld?

"Pentium running at" - why should people have that?

"Just because someone cares about the visuals" - that is not the topic. It just that if you show Thief Dark Project to a teenager today, he'll say - "Horrible graphics, why should I play that?", but if you show him stupid RotN, he'll say - "Oh, 3D, cool!".

"And why FPS should evolve" - FPS don't evolve, pc's do. As a modeler, you should know that perfectly well. The more polygons you can make, the easier it is.

Don't get me wrong. If your game has bad graphics, it doesn't mean I'll lose interest.

I'll show you later, I have some nice not very high textures from Heretic Retexturing project, but I don't have acces to photoshop right now, and they are TGA format. Even better, I'll show you some screens in action.

Uh... nothing's wrong. That's the point. You're the one with the anti-3D agenda. And while we're at it, last time I checked - and funnily enough, that was today! - the player is not being forced to zoom in that close. It's his decision and we're allowing it, but often enough you'll see the objects from a notably higher distance. *gasp*

They always have much better graphics for some reason. Gosh, that was my point, too. Btw., you should compare the character models in Paraworld to the character models in aforementioned MGS. Wanna see? How about this one (http://www.s2.com.br/s2arquivos/361/Imagens/316Image.jpg)? Notice something? Is it just me or do the models actually look worse than ours? :) So, in MGS - a game that was always close to the characters - it's fine for you, in an RTS where it's just an option to zoom it's not? Uh huh.

FPS don't evolve, pc's do.
Yeah, and life doesn't evolve, just the conditions, eh?

hmmm i don't get it... first you are bashing the game because of the "prerendered screenshots" and now you are telling me that it has bad graphics, now what? Is it too good to be true or too bad for your taste? I really don't get it, i don't have any problems with criticism, but attacking the game without any reason or any arguments that can stand longer than a hour isn't what i'd call criticism.

You just can't compare a shooter with a RTSgame, why? Well thats easy because they are just too different. Just try one thing, turn off the clipping in Doom 3 and zoom out for about 50-80 meters and now tell me how good does it still look? And can you see and tell the difference between dozens of enemy characters? You need to consider different things when doing the graphics in different games, and considering a online mag that uses a rendering of a unit in another way as it is supposed to be is not a thing that any developer can consider...

Well, that is not exactly true. I do prefer old Heretic sprites to 3D-models, but that is the only case. Otherwise, I preffer 3D... In FPS.

I'm bashing the game because 3D takes too much time for nothing.

Well, I think DooM 3 characters are quite well modeled. Though textures sometimes look bad, sometimes good. Wall textures are streched, for instance, but the general picture is OK. The general picture of your project looks OK on far zoom, and that is the only way I look at the game, so I suppose it won't bother me much, besides, later I'll just be thinking "will two brachiosaurs cope with 7 archers if I won't upgrade them?". But is sometimes nice to look up close at a dino, when you can. And how dissapointing it is to realize - "the picture is still ulgy, no one in their right mind would want to look so close. They wasted so much time on textures and models, while they could have made the game be more balanced and detailed. Eh, such a good idea, sunk into graphics. Hate deadlines."

I do understand that FPS has less characters so you can make them much more detailed. That is why I don't support RTS-RPG 3D. THey have many creatures on a map, so you just have one texture per unit. Or, whatever, I don't have a good idea on how textures are placed.

Speaking of the MGS screens - well,I have a very bizzare thought about how textures, and and also models, should look like so they will look nice even if in bad quality. It's a bad comparison, because you, I suppose, never played any, DooM looks a lot worse than Heretic. Or, maybe that would be closer, Thief looks better than SoF. And NWN looks better than Sacred... NWN is more appealing to me, even though you see things very close and the models are squarely. That is why I'm talking about textures here, because I'm more worried about how detailed textures are, not how much 3D a model is...

And, Neox, if you still want to see textures I preffer - they are wall textures, so maybe they won't fit here? But in modeling programms textures fit well on models... So I supposed wall textures and model textures are not very far from each other... What I'm wondering, though, almost everywhere textures are stretched from what they were. Why? Why aren't they made the exact size they are supposed to be for a certain model/wall? Heretic Retextures textures look better for me than DooM 3 ones, because Heretic ones are not stretched too much, but heretic is pretty square, so maybe you don't have to fuss about that too much... So why devs strech them? WHat does it matter to the comp if four pixels are the same color or 4 different colors..?

If you are annoyed by this conversation (I can't criticise you if I didn't see stuff in action), why contonue it... I just supposed that if you are answering, you are having a break from work (thanksgiving, after all), so you don't actually waste time on people who complain, just answer that you want to. If you are annoyed, tell me to stop writing about this and I will, just I like talking to intellegent people on forums... And you should be right about everythig, I mean, not worry, because the only thing you have to do is convince me, and you will sooner or later... OK, I'm not that good in English to explain it all... Ok, I'm better to shut up...

You can improve such things all the time. Your argument is very senseless.
When PC's reach the point when RTS can have nice textures, free to go over to 3D.

In 5 years you would have textures in RTS like today in a FPS. But FPS textures will get better, too....
I'm sure in 5 years you would say 'wait! let's wait for the minute when RTS textures are like FPS textures' :scratch: :wink:
