I heard of a editing mode in the game can you only edit maps or can you edit units two?
hmmm not easy to answer that question, because i don't know which tools will be given away... if only the leveleditor, then you'll only have the chance to edit units by changing their textures. If the exporters for 3dsmax will be given away, you should be able to change all the models(be carefull with that ;) ) and script in new ones. But i really can't say if the techtree tool is going to be public.
Well, there is no sense in changing unit models if you can't change their stats... Also, only 3D studio max? What about maya? Without RM, you need an editor...
the whole production of paraworld is aiming for max, so there won't be a maya version the exporter... what so you mean with RM?
And why does it have to be senseless to only change the models? that would kill allmost all quake models ;)
RM = Random Map. Games without it die quickly because the only thing for players to do after they played Campaign and all Custom levels is create their own levels. Or create their own RM, like fans made for HoMaM IV.
What has Quake to do with anything?
What use it is to change the way a model looks?
"What has Quake to do with anything?"
i was just pointing at this because you're linking to a quake mod... pretty much 90% of all quake mods are just model modifactions with changed textures or some of them with changed models and animsets too, whats the point of doing them either? its fun nothing more, nothing less...
Since when Quake became an RTS? And which Quake are you talking about?
If you are about Quake III, changing the look of models without changing their stats make sense, because Quake III is a multiplayer game only, so all models must be the same by stats. On the other hand, if you want to alter the game, you may want to balance the different characters by other ways.
Speaking of any other Quake, it is always nice to put in a new monster or weapon in. And I personaly don't see any sense in changing textures in an FPS, except if it's a global graphics improvement like DooMsday... But I'm afraid I didn't play Quake I or II much, and never edited it. The only FPS I edited was Heretic/heXen, but I doubt anyone remembers those now. And if I edited, I either made new levels with everything the same, or altered the stats.
"Since when Quake became an RTS? And which Quake are you talking about?"
i'm talking about the shooter quake, I could have used halflife too because they are heavy modded games and there are a lot of simple mods which are just done by changing the outer appearence of the models. THis was all done for having fun and showning the community what you can do... why does there always have to be any sense?
Yeah, there are minor mods like that. Having fun and showing the comminity - yeah. Only that is not all, is it? DooM 3, Half-Life 2, and once Quake III are heavily modeled... There are whole two TC's for DooM 3 - a Thief one and the one in my signature, + over 50 DooM-related powerful modifications that are much more then texture changing - you can just visit ModD3 Database... Same amount goes for HL2 Source, or Quake - many, many mods. Texture change is a joke. Most are like that. But the main ones, especially TC's, are much more worth the download. How many people want to make a game of their dream? Or how many want to play a game of their dream? Or how many want a new Quake that feels much more Quake than Q4? Or how many just want a fan-made patch (those are already being made for Q4)?
I'm not saying that your editor should be hyper-editable, unless you want to compete with Warcraft III. I just want to point out that texture change is what it is - a nuisanse, unless it is made for graphics update. In fact, a change in texture is even less important in RTS, where strategy is the main thing. Still, I'm playing AoE II, and I can't stop regretting that there is no stats change in it. I imagine what I could have made.
Hey, Eidolon, nobody will forces you to change the textures. If you don't like the idea to change them, just leave them how they are
and stop beeing so agressive
I'm not agressive. I'm just saying texture change is pretty much nothing...
I thought you don't like the PW textures, this should be a really good thing to show how a better texture has to look like
who cares? as long as the people have fun doing it, let them do it, wasn't it you who said we have crappy textures? when the game is out, it's your turn to change that :P
Well, I already said that it may be cool to change textures to more detailed ones in the longer run for overall graphical improvement.
So, what's your point?
Well, the problem is, in places I edited mostly you can change the texture, but not its "size", and the texture looks normal by itself but looks ugly on a wall because it's stretched. Or, the engine may just display textures in pecular way so you can't really change it without changing the engine... I don't know how model textures work though. So it depends on how can they be edited too. Maybe all you can do is change the texture, not make it high-res or something.
So you want to change stuff you don't know about but in first place assume it does not work, but you don't know. And because you don't know, you assume it can't work properly. Well, that's how games are made, right? Because we don't know either but we keep pushing buttons and look what happens.
and why want you to make them highres? they are highres enough for a RTS (!) (btw. what is hirhres for you? 4096^2  ?)
Kapro is right, but there are manuals for dummies like me still! What if I love the game but then can't do anything with it! (hmm, are we ever going to be allowed our own avatars? I almost mixed this guy with Neox!)
To Gorm - They are fine now, but how will they look 5 years later? You know, this game looked fine in 1995 too - http://img454.imageshack.us/my.php?image=newbitmapimage6qr.png. Only now it's pretty outdated. And being old doesn't make a game bad still, it just makes it uglier... And since PW is not on the verge of graphic's end it will be nice to improve the look of the game some years past. Well, I wouldn't mind to improve Starcraft sprites too... They are pretty murky...
