Ok... Title explains it all.. I like to setup a pure defence usually includes towers beside each other. On one island of mine, the towers will shot, on another island, they just sit there getting shot at... Anyone know why?

Also got one other question.... What the hell is Gallows used for?

I may not be the Anno1602-god-of-wisdom, but I think this is the correct explanation:
You propably have over 255 towers on one island. Unfortunately Anno1602 isn't up to so many towers and the towers fail. Remove some towers and the remaining (less than 255) will work again.

There is a thief that will periodically mug your cartmen. The gallows is used to prevent this thief from stealing goods from the cartmen. It prevents thievery within it's area of influence.

Dobber, have you seen the thief? Not long ago you said you had never seen him.

I don't use the gallows anymore. It doesn't seem to help and it costs money to operate.

Yes Eric, I finally did see the thief, he whacked my cartman on the head and he died, with the goods not making it to market. I don't build one until I have a Church, then I delete the chapel and build a gallows and a statue in it's place.

The 255 number for functioning towers is correct but that is not the limit per island. That is the limit for the entire map.

P.S. I am not the 1602 god of wisdom either, I think maybe that is Manny, wherever he is.

Instead of using gallows just use trees, when you start building the town area cut the roads and place a row of trees around the whole area the thief cant get to the goods if they are not put in the city limits this way... to view an example join Helens groups and go to the pictures area, I have a screenshot of this!!

I just separate the production from the living area - and put the toolsmith, the smelter and the cannon foundry close to the market, i.e. without even a road. You will not see the mule nor the workers, but the transport times will be very short and the thief has no chance either.
