I am playing a scenario, and i just got the option of building a palace. I looked at it and there are running costs for it, what are the benefits of building a palace?

It just looks good. And I think you can up the taxes for a short time after building the palace.

Also, if you build a palace, you can only build it once in a scenario. You can't delete it and then build it again elsewhere so be sure where you want to put it first.

Thanks for the quick answers to my question, I dont think I need the extra tax income, I have about 2 million gold and the scenario instructions are 2 islands with 10,000 inhabitants and space is running kind of short, so I will wait till I get my island populated before I build it.

So you are playing "Delusions of a Grandeur"? :go:

Yes, Roadrunner, thats the one. It is very challenging. I've only gotten 1 island up to around 8500 aristocrats, and it doesnt look like their is going to be enough gold for the other island. 400 merchant houses would take up a lot of space

Remember Ziggy, the goal is 10,000 "Inhabitants" per island. that means the total population including all the workers as well, not just the "taxpayers".
Once you have your 10,000 on one island then you can withdraw the jewelry from your aristos on that island. Just lower the taxes on them and they will be just fine without it. Then you can use the jewelry to build up aristocrats on the second island.

And try to have only aristocrat houses; for merchants the space will not be enough, I think. You may not only omit one good (jewelry), but even two, if the taxes are low. Do not provide cocoa and jewelry, for instance, or jewelry and cigars...

In that scenario, I also used relay islands: set your ship routes from distant islands to an island half way (or even nearer to) your main island, and let the goods be delivered there. Another ship may then pick up these goods and move them to your main island. This way, the delivery intervals are shortened significantly, and you can empty the production island warehouses (or fill up the main island warehouse) more often...

I also think the space is not enough for you to get the 10,000 with just merchants. I remember my second island being solid aristos and no extra space. I named that island New York. My other island had enough room to have cattle farms in addition to the city so I named it Chicago due to the stock yards of long ago.

The relay for the goods helps. I also would restrict the building until the warehouse was full and then let them burst into a building boom. The merchants want the clothes and jewelry but they don't use up the supplies of it. The citizens want cocoa but they don't deplete your supply.

The relay wharehouses are helping a lot, thats a great idea. When I started this scenario, and realized that there wasnt going to be enough gold for all aristocrat housing to have jewelry, it got me to thinking if it was possible to have 10,000 merchants on one of the islands. At this point I have around 8,300 on the island in the middle of the map with 100% vines. Its very crowded, but I think I will be able to cram enough people in there to meet the goal.

You don't need 10,000 merchants, you need 10,000 Inhabitants.

Yes, I know, I was seeing if it was possible.
