View Full Version : About the copyprotection (maybe important for frank&frujin)
some of you maybe know the game "castle strike" from data becker. the forum of the game shows that MANY customers cant run the game cuase the copy protection cause several problems.
so i hope that sunflowers and bss check really out that the game is running on different common hardwareconfigurations.
i only say this cuase the forum of castle strike is full of negative posts because of that error with the copy protection.
it also seems that data becker had soled EVERY copy of castle strike with the same cd-key,... seems stupid but according the forum postst its true!
then the last thing is that the admin of the castle strike forum didnt registered his nickname and someone used it to post bull****. i think if somone here would try to log himslef in as frank fay or frujin, except the REAL ones, he would simply fail.
the admin from the castle strike forum is a good guy, but that was stupid mistake from him :D
so i hope and think that the KoH team is doing better work
edit: so take this post as you want. as a funny example how you shouldnt do it, or as a reminder not to end like data becker with castle strike

I know what you mean...
But we can not disclose the copy protection here. We will definately make compatibility testing.

copy protection is a funny thing...
cracked within minutes (its a kind of sports) by experts and a little bit later online
but "unsolvable" by legal customers which simply want to run their games :D

of course, you will use one. but my post described how the guys from the other company screwed up theyre medieval RTS game.
i dont want to smaller the work of data becker, but data becker is far away from "where the big boys play"- league
they could go to higher lvl, but as i wrote they did some stupid mistakes and made the customers not happy, they made them angry.
but i think and hope, that you are not screwing up KoH in a similar way that data becker did with castle strike ;)
edit: of course you hate the software pirates, frank. you get payed fron the sold games. if someone would ruin my job, i would hate him too
it seems that the copy protection of farcry also cause problems to the user. specially under win 2000 and win xp. some people cant run the game. according informations it has to do with the burning programms. sepcially ***** (actually, that one is forbidden since couple of time!!!)
i dont know if its enough to just deactivate them.

sorry its again in german, but i dont have infos in english
i know that there is need for copyprotection, but must it be that way that it cause conflicts that the user must do so many steps to fix it? :(

In germany ****** etc. ar illegal, yes.
But usually it's enough to install a new version of the program to be able to play your images again.
( And all software with blacklists, ie. Farcry )

would ask someone of admins to do it anyway, cause its obviously wrong here, so thx frank.
at the end we can thank all the fu***** sofwatare pirates for those misseries :(
i just red tha official farcry forum patiently. lots of the threads are full with compalins that people are not able to run the game, or even install it. some are also writeing that some threads who where also full with "i have problem, please help!" got simply erased. i also can image that those erased thread where full of offensive writeing against crytek (the devs) and ubisoft (the publisher) but i think it would be better if the producing comany would talk to the fans/customers as just erase the threads.
its also scaring that the topics of the forum boards are written that way, that you can see the fans are for thyere own, cause they are described like "user helps user"
would be better ift here also would be a: "producer helps customer"
i dont know if there is a new copyprotection out, which is suggestet to ALL gameproducers to use,... just the same protection that makes the customers of castle strike and fary cry angry. at the end i must give a guy right, who wrote that such a complexe copy protection makes only problem to the true customers who payed for the game, but for a cracker its no deal.
i have to say that farcry costs about 50 EURO (its about 100 DeutschMark) and for that price its reeally disapointing to have such a trouble. thats almost the same, as i would just buy the empty gamebox, cause i cant play the game anyway. if i would be a gameproducer, i would take that whole situation as a big warning!
i dont know what the name of that copy protection is. but you can bet that i will have an eye on other coming games, to watch if they maybe use the same protection what cause the same problems as it does with castle strike and far cry.
i think a copy protection which brings more problems then it helps, its not good for both sides, producers and customers.

It's a common approach for copy-protections to deny access when those anti-copy-protection-programs-which-were-censored-above are detected. And because many people evade searching CDs by using images of them they have such software installed and thus can't play those games. But the errormessage leaves the user absolutely clueless about the error "Please insert gameCD into your CD drive" what soon turns into anger.
It would be much easier to edit the erromessage into "Please deactivate program ******." and help the user to do so.
Certain programs are not a garantee that the game-CD is an image/copy.

we can discuss about the need or no need of programms like *****, but the point is, if a copyprotection must really be made tha tway that its makes trouble to the user? some guys write that they dont even have nero or uninstalled every cd/dvd copy programm and the game still doesnt work.
so its sad, that the copmanies are puting much work in a game (mean both, castle strike and farcry) and at the end a strange copyprotection ruins everything and the company is almost helpless against the errors.

That the companies can't help themselves is a consequence of their own crusade against cd-copies. They use the normal "Please inser Disc 1 into your CDrom-drive"-message and now they can't see if the error was caused by some "bad" programs running or a read-error or god's will ;) .
I hope some devs will learn from that. Senseless error-messages neither help the user nor the devs. Only the frustration-devil inside your head who wants to start flamewars and insult the devs :) .

[ @ Bora: I believe our mods want to keep us from writing the names of those "bad" programs, so you would do them a favor not to mention them. Remember: The server is located in Germany. ]

as i have read in a lot of forums, people start to load down cracked programs, if their legally purchased one does not work.
i would do this too, if copy protection would stop me from playing.
but its dangerous: next time customers maybe will download it instead of buying... why get angry with the "protected" original, when i have to download a crack to get it work
btw: i love windows error messages. who dont like riddles? :bday:

thats exactly that what the customers, of the two games i write, do. they bought the game legaly, it doesnt work, they loaded down the crack and, oh wonder, the game works!
i have to say thet not all customers, of those games i write about, had probs, but a scary big amount of them!
just to say it: my posts are based on the posts of the users of official forums of those games, so i dont invent something!
the problem ist that the use of a inofficiall crack (dont know any official cracks!) breaks that license you agreed, when you install the game, but when you dont use the crack, the game doesnt work.
so its a a kind of diabolic circle

maybe it is important to point out...the developers do not decide about the copyprotection, same the producer... We have to make sure it gets implemented...
